Any Options for Lowest Spec Radio Screen Replacement?
I've been reading about all the GVIF installs, and how to retro-fit cameras onto the top-spec touchscreen with satnav. I've read about aftermarket screen options for the D3. But what about us poor D4 "lowest spec" radio owners out there?
In case you're wondering, there is a monochrome LCD(?) and some coloured icons which are located in place of the colour touchscreen satnav. Here's some photos:
I would like to put a screen there that I can connect a rear camera to, and also display all the other information it currently does (ie Radio Station, Input, Bluetooth connectivity etc). Of course I would like to retain the existing factory control panel and steering wheel controls.
It would be a bonus if I could connect any/all of the following:
SatNav
DVD / AV Source
So, any options out there? Hopefully tried and tested?Suzuki Vitara 3dr

still think that bezel is perfect for all low spec D3'ers who want to "factory fit" a Tom Tom in their empty space
may be Nick (TLO) can come up with a Part No for people Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I don't need one myself Dave as my Sat Nav screen fits nice and snugly in that space on my SE D3
But when I had my S I was always on the look out for a neat solution - as others were/are Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I have been wondering if it is possible to purchase a second hand D3 screen and install that into the D4. I believe that you may have to purchase a new bezel for the D3 screen so that you would get a good looking fit into the D4. The screen would be used as a simple dumb screen. I would then purchase an Alpine/Kenwood hideaway hardisk based sat/nav. I would then feed the sat/nav output into the screen. As far as I am aware there is one connector that has five or six cables that attach into the back of the Mono screen. It would be interesting to see a picture of the back of the latest D4 HSE/XS sat/nav screen to establish if the single GS connector/cables would fit seamlessly into this screen. Maybe somebody who has had their sat/nav out can put a picture of the back of the screen on to the forum. It may be then worthwhile finding a 2010 sat/nav screen instead of a D3 screen. As for the radio connection the only difference from a visual point of view is that the XS/HSE has a feed to the clock in the middle of the radio which the GS does not have.

Phillw - thanks for the thoughts, but if a screen replacement is done as a dumb screen, then you can't see what the radio does?
- will it just "plug & play" ie detach mono screen, attach colour screen?
Does anyone know what the plug from the factory low-spec radio looks like?Suzuki Vitara 3dr

Hello eddoMak. To be honest I don’t know if it would be plug and play. It would be very unlikely. I was kind of thinking that rather than purchasing a new external screen from the likes of Alpine/Kenwood it may be possible to use a second hand D3/D4 screen. With that in mind there may be somebody like www.connects2.co.uk that could supply some electronic interface between the D4 car audio/Bluetooth etc and the D3/D4 screen. I was kind of hoping that one of the guys on the forum that has more experience of the electronics (canbus/Most interface) may be able to offer some advice. If you can retro-fit the sat/nav audio in a D3 it will only be a matter of time before somebody does it here. The actual physical mechanics of installing the screen and the high spec radio it relatively easy. I feel confident that I could do that now. However setting up the electronics is the clever bit and is a little bit beyond me.

Hello,
I`ve got my new Disco4 yesterday. I have the same low-spec radio as eddomak. Are there any news about screen replacement???
The items of Kenwood seem to be nice, but I didn`t find a special one for the disvovery 4 for simple replacing with the original.

I have now passed some Ford Fiestas that seem to have the same radio system.
But it has given me a clue that I have followed up. It's more than likely that the lowest spec radio system is the FordSYNC system that was developed between Ford and Microsoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Sync). It looks like there is still development on this platform that allows Pandora integration (http://mashable.com/2010/04/20/ford-sync-applink/)
So if anyone happens to know if there have been any options for this, then that would be great. I guess the chances of something out there are now higher since it seems to be a platform for a mass-market car. Hopefully?Suzuki Vitara 3dr

I was wondering about the same. I have seen the screen moves to where the cup holdrs are but wondered what the input was so it could be input into a touch screen as an aux in.
I asked wiggs what the type of input it was but haven't heard anything yet.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
