hi can anyone help with a dit of information i recently sold my freelander diesel to get my d3 diesel i ran it for over 2 years as a 2 wheel drive ( removed the rear prop ) and gained approx 10mpg more.... so my question is am i able to do the same with the d3 ???? as ive no intenshion of going off road in it. thanks

Seems an odd one, why buy a 4x4 and convert to 2WD? Why not save a few ££ and buy a 2WD car in the first place?

I have heard people do it and then put it back for winter.
Not sure what it would do to a D3 though as it is a little more complex than a viscous coupling in the Freelander.

AndrewS had a broken driveshaft removed from his D3 in the middle of the Moroccan desert in 2007.... the motor had a serious hissy fit and we ended up towing it for 60 odd miles to the nearest village. Can't see for the life of me that she would be happy unless you also did some ecu \ electrical \ sensor adjustments  21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

DG I did manage to get it out of the desert in 3 wheel drive in Rock Craw of about 40 miles 
She only threw a hissy fit on the tarmac.
Oh and No it wont work. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Sell it and buy a Land Rover Series 2/2a/3 with selectable 2wd/4wd at the pull of a big red lever, and a satisfying crunch as huge bits of iron collide and become one. Perfect design

To answer the OP, no it is not going to work. The electronics in the D3 get grumpy when you don't do silly stuff with it so it is seriously going to throw its teddy out if you do this.
To be honest, I would reconsider the D3 purchase if fuel economy is a major driver. The D3 is fantastic but a thirsty beast.

Not withstanding the denigration of the available capabilities of the Disco3, I am under the impression that the Freelander is front wheel drive normally, and only goes into 4 wheel drive on the loss of front wheel traction, therefore the only economy would be through lack of drag etc from the rear diff. ( I may be wrong)

And a very capable offroader
when I got the wife's flander it was dragging when reversing around a corner, so I obtained a refurbed VCU from a local engineering co. £700 cheaper than a new unit from landrover
after fitment, it was a new car to drive, and even my local indy commented the other day that it doesn't 'skip' the back wheels around his yard when manouvering it compared to other flanders he works on..
But commented that does the refurbed one acually work?? 
so a quick call to the engineering firm, and was informed that because they have to slice the old unit open, they have to remove 3 plates out of the 48-ish to make room to reweld after the new viscous liquid stuff is put in, thus making it approx 5% looser .
Ok, So to know for sure, I have a 'test area' near to where I live and all my 4x4's have been up this steep, sideslope grassy hillock. Sure enough half way up the rear wheels scrabbled in the gravel and up we went.
Some one I know USED to have a flander with the prop removed and the IRD pee-ing oil out of the open end and it wouldn't touch this slope, and in the snow... 
So in a round about way Im trying to say in a right ol waffle (sorry) that some people take them off to preserve the IRD, from the seized VCU constantly applying pressure to the drive train and chewing out the bearings on the ird unit.

Don't forget that it's difficult to make comparisons as the FL2 runs with Haldex which is different to the D3 \ 4 system 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
