I have to hand the keys back on my current car in December when the contract expires and I've decided to go for my 1st Disco this time. My question is do I go for a MY12 or save some money and go for a late MY11? I know I will have to get my skates on if it's the latest car, but there are a couple floating around the network already, so I think I may be able to get one nearer xmas. Is the MY12 really worth the extra £5k or so over a late MY11? My mileage is 15k pa and I change every 3 years, any advice gratefully received.

The MY12 has definitely got a bit more oomph than the MY11 loaner I drove the other day, but it's not like the difference between a D3 and a D4. The stereo, sat nav etc are all a big step up in the XS, but I'm less convinced by the twirly gear knob (a lever still makes a lot more sense to me). The flappy paddles I could certainly live without (though I use them for overtaking, if they put a proper gearstick back in so it was easy to drop in and out of S I wouldn't need them...)
Assuming you're on some kind of finance, the bigger influence may be in the difference in retained value at the end - I think you'll find a late D3 is worth a lot less than an early D4, and I'd guess the same will apply to a late MY11 vs a MY12 of the same nominal age and condition

Oh alright then! I'm thinking that whatever deal I try to negotiate for a 12 will be affected by supply, but it does seem that the improvements in performance/economy and nav/phone probably make it worth taking more pain, just seems a big gap when I trawl through autotrader.

Martin, you make a good point. My experience with the rotary gear selector has been quite a pleasant one tbh. It just took a little getting used to but after a couple of days it is every bit as intuitive as using the lever. The paddles are perfect for instant down changes for overtakes etc without having take a hand off the wheel. This I think, adds a small extra factor of safety over selecting the gear via Commandshift.
I agree that when it comes to resale , the most recent model possible is always going increase that figure and whatever our personal opinion, purchasers will often want the latest version with the latest gadgets. IMHO

When you refer to a 'late MY11' are you talking about a new one, or a second hand one? I'd presumed new, but if second hand, then I can see why prices would be so different.
It is possible to achieve discounts of circa 8% off MY12, but probably only for a new build order with the delay in delivery that, that means. But then you could also look at NFU membership, worth 5% on an HSE or 4% on an XS. D4 XS MY12 Galway

Hi Calculator, yes I'm thinking about a demonstrator or similar. Trawling through Auto Trader I've seen some nice ones up for mid 40's which means there's probably a deal to be had, especially as the MY 12 is now on stream. I'm weighing up whether it's worth stretching to a new MY12 car (provided I can get one in time), there's a very honest guy at Stafford LR who reckons the MY12 is way better but he can't supply until next March, I just wondered if others concurred.

picked my my12 up last week put in 59 plate d4 I thought that was good but the new one is far better quicker more willing to crack on and the gear change is just a delight. with around 400 rev less in 8th the fuel gauge just goes down a little slower.
added bonus like you dont have to turn it to park before switching off as it does it its self just cool love it.

Thanks Allforus, that's the sort of encouragement I need!! I can't get my hands on a brochure and the LR web site is static, but the dealer I spoke to mentioned big improvements on sat nav and comms over the MY11, could you enlighten me a little?

Hi Calcul@tor, Thanks! Yes, We are the LR Dealer for Cameroon, although i'm British, i haven't lived in the UK now for over 8 years! But i do like to keep up with what's happening back home!
Pleased i could help, i have a Disco 4 HSE MY11, and i'm chuffed to bits with it. If i could choose a MY12 over the MY11 i would, but here we would have to wait until February before it would arrive. so MY11 it was!

Thanks everyone, slowly getting there and building an idea of the improvements over MY11, great to see that this site is truly global, thank you Chris. I've decided to push the boat out and go for an MY12, will start calling the dealers to see what's out there for pre xmas delivery and promise to let this forum know how I get on.
