Brakes vibrating and smoking

Hi All,

Just wondering if someone can offer me some advice.

Last week I sent my 2006 D3 to my local garage for a brake service following the brake warning light appearing on my dash.

As I am not a mechanic and I didn't know the condition of the brakes, I decided it would be a good idea to have all discs and pads replaced so that I knew where I was.

It gave me great pleasure when the garage rang me to say that there was no need to replace the rear disc and it would only need new discs on the front and new pads all round.

Hear is the bad bit.....

I have just driven the car properly for the first time since the work was carried out.
After 5 mins driving at 30mph the car began to vibrate a little so I pulled over. I couldn't see anything obviously wrong but there was a slight burning smell (like brake pad smell).

Deciding to take the risk I drove on and once I got up to 50mph the vibration became quite violent and as I slowed down to pull into a lay by it felt as if my wheels were egg shaped. The car was actually moving up and down as if you were driving over bumps.
When I stopped there was smoke coming from the rear drivers side wheel. I let it cool down and then cruised home using the gears to slow me down (no issues when using the gears to brake).

Has anyone come across this before or does anyone have any idea what it could be? I would like to have any idea of what I am talking about when I speak to the garage about it.

Thanks

Lee

could be a sticking brake caliper. It doesnt sound like the EPB shoes binding if it doesnt do it unless you brake.

is the wheel hot to touch ??.

Hi Duncan,

Thanks for coming back to me.

I could feel heat coming from the general area but the wheel itself didn't seem to be hot to touch.

Thanks

Just had a read of your post Duncan and it sounds very similar. I hadn't actually driven that far so the wheel may start to get hot if I had taken it further.

The only thing I don't get is the feeling as if you are driving over humps. It was like I was driving on a flat tyre.

I would bet a £1 to a dollar of pooh its the NSR brake shoe over adjusted when they stripped down the brakes whilst servicing them prior to having the pads replaced Thumbs Up

BTW if you look at the brake hub you'll also notice its slightly red from the heat Confused

Obviously they did not take it for a test drive after the works were completed, so I assume not a franchised LR dealer, simple fix take it back and get them to adjust accordingly Thumbs Up

I recon this problem falls in to the "been there, seen it, done it" thread hey chaps Rolling with laughter

Thanks for that,

I will mention it to them when I take it back.

Would that also explain the humping sensation? Smile

the EPB is a possibility, but if it doesnt do it unless you brake i wouldnt have thought it would be.

unless its just a coincidence that you didnt brake and it didnt get hot.

can you jack the wheel up and see how easy it is to rotate.

yep coz the brake shoe is physically stuck to the drum due to the heat exchange (only a small tolerance between shoe and drum) so when yer stationary the air suspension will want to "settle" but cant coz the brake show will not allow the vehicle to adjust its height.

If you've go a rubber mallet, give the wheel a wack with the EPB off and the auto box in park/manual 1st gear when its cold and keep the park brake off.

Get someone to drive the car at a slow walking pace to hear if its still binding and give him a wack or two till it releases Shocked

BTW yer local franchsied LR dealer does have a special tool to adjust both sides of the brakes shoes and its not a mallet Rolling with laughter

I'm going to get the garage to come and pick it up tomorrow so I will let them do it in the rain rather than me! Smile

At least I have an idea of what it may be now.

Thanks

He never said it was when he braked, but when driving Dunc, had the same issue around 3 years ago when on holiday in France, fully laddened on the motorway, thought it was the road surfaces so took no notice till we got back home and found the burnt drum then on stripping down, all the brake shoes were totally trashed and disintergrated (hence the vibration), LR dealer paid for cost whilst at the tyre/brake fitters so no harm done Thumbs Up

so was it a franchised LR dealer or independent? BTW they'll not do it on yer drive coz they'll have to take the drum off to see if the brake shoes are trashed/and to re-clean the dust away (so worth you being there to inspect to your satisfaction). Very Happy

Yeah an independent garage not LR dealer. My local LR dealership are about as much use as a chocolate frog!

Only interested in you if your bank balance exceeds 1 million. Otherwise they don't give you the time of day.

I'm having same problem! Mine is offside. Not sure if EPB or not. Just had new discs and pads all round and rear shoes. Rear off side disc/drum gets seriously hot. And pongs!
Frustrated, Big Cry Any ideas??
