It must be September with discussions returning to winter tyres. Discussions surrounding the FBH will be next.
I used Vredstein Wintrac 4Xtremes mounted on cheap e-bay 17" rims for a month in the Alps last Christmas / New Year. Brilliant tyres. Used on autoroutes with masses of standing water, compacted snow, gravelly ice/snow mix and mixed snow and tarmac without any issues whatsoever. The only surface I didn't get chance to use them on was deep fresh snow as we left it all behind in the UK
I can't wait until my annual service in November to swap back to the silky smooth, quiet riding of a Wintrac shod DiscoClub missing my D3

Thanks, hensoni. Do you know if the tyre sizes work on the 18" rims though?
The 235s come up when I search for model on the site I'm using; the 255s are my own search aiming for 255/60 which they don't seem to have.

I've used Falken tyres on my Volvo previously and they were rubbish. Using Federal at the moment (Pirellis on the D3) and they are excellent, decent grip and long-lasting and cheap as chips.Dec 04 TDV6 HSE in Tonga green with Alpaca interior.

The Vreds are available in 255/60 18 with the right Load Index. There is a wide range of tyres for the 18s. The problem with 255 width is that clearance is a bit snug with snowchains especially when your wheelarches are full of slush, roadkill, branches, jaywalking skiers, etc. Narrow tyres are also meant to cut through the snow better although I suspect this is urban myth.
235/70 17, 255/60 18 and 255/55 19 all result in a compatible rolling circumference. The 235/70 17 is fractionally smaller. I use tyres-pneu-online as a guide to what is available, checking circumferences, etc and go find the tyres somewhere cheaper!Club missing my D3

I've got my eye on a set, rims + tyres but the size is a little off... 235/65/r18
My normal tyres are 255/60/18, is this harmfull for the car to drive 65/r18??

Thnx! Cool tool Geoff, seems to be ok, tyre rolling circumferance on stock tyre 2328mm and the other one 2326mm... Don't think this will harm the car.. And they do come as cheap as chips Discovery 3 HSE - Bonatti Grey

As a previous user of Falken winter tyres I can only agree with the previous poster that you should avoid those if possible. I had to change back to Nokian after half a season, and have never looked back.
If available in your part of the world I would try to get my hands on one of these studded tyres:
Nokian Hakkapeliitta SUV 5 (or possibly Hakkapeliitta 7 if you want an extreme tyre)
Continental Conti IceContact
With the exception of a short period of Falken I have driven cars with Nokian Hakkapeliitta studded tyres for the last 10 years - excellent on snow, ice and dry tarmac (some noise), and average on wet roads. I use them for about 3 winters (about 5 months a year) before I get new ones.

I've been extrememly impressed with Conti Winter Contact tyres. I have these on 19" rims. They were superb in the snow last year.PAGODA

Land Rover have a list of approved oem winter/cold weather tyres. I've seen it on this site a couple of times. Haven't got time to search for it now, hopefully someone else will find it and post it up.
