Problems installing multiheight tow bar - help please!!!
Hi
Firstly an apology as I have posted this on another thread already but really need some advice...
I am half way through the installation of the multiheight towbar on my discovery 3 55 plate (only had it for 4 weeks). I have fitted the stabiliser to the left hand chassis rail without any problems. When I removed the bolt from the captive nut on the right hand side, the nut moved immediately such that it no longer aligned with the hole in the chassis rail I have tried for a few hours to turn the captive nut whilst exerting leverage from a screw driver to realign the nut with hole in order to reinsert the bolt but to avail. I have the new captive nut and bolt that came with the towbar but am not sure if I can just hammer out the old captive nut out of the other side of rail (I think it is also used to attach the damping weights to the chassis)
End result: a towbar half fitted, the battery has gone flat on the disco and the batteries in my head torch are starting to die......
Any guidance on how I can either realign the nut (without trashing the thread) or remove the old nut to insert the new shiny one would be massively appreciated. Whilst I haven't made many posts to date, I have found this forum nothing short of inspirational thanks to all the fantastic advice. I may have to manage my mechanical expectations a bit better in the future - especially if I have to take the car to a garage to get the towbar fitted.
Thanks
James

the captive nut you are talking about is the threaded sleave that stops the the chassis getting sqashed ? if it is have you tryed slackening the big nut on the other end ? you need to hold the allen key shaped part with a 10mm and then the nut will be able to slacken ,am i makeing sense

yup perfect sense. Don't know why I didn't twig the reason for the allen key shaped-end before. Thanks.

Fitted it this evening, loosening off the nut did the trick exactly as described. Electrics was just as easy (wiring looms were a bit awkward). Thanks again, for the advice guys. James
