Hi
lots about getting jump starting and not connecting straight to the battery but, What about when giving someone a jump (start) do the same rules apply? It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Ahh but you have the "luck of the Irish " on your side
as only 1/16th Irish I need good management not good luck..
I don't want to have any ECU issues It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

I've jump started other vehicles from mine before with no problems.
Generally Positive from Battery to Battery, Negative from D3 Battery, to Other Car Ground point.
Connect them up, start the D3 & let it charge the other vehicle for a few minutes. Usually give the revs around 1500 to help the alternator push the power out.
then start the other car & all done. Bodsys Brake Bible

hi
not sure why it would damage the ECU as long as you connect the jump leads
correctly
i have found that the battery is powerful enough to start the jumped vechicle
without starting the disco

I recently jump started my girlfriends car off the aux battery (Optima YT). I connected positive to positive and negative to negative.
Anyone knows why it is recommended to connect negative to an earth point rather than directly to the negative terminal? Dennis

for safetys sake i got a portable jump start ,dont want to mess with the car ,will carry mine through the winter months . 2008 ,hse, it does what it says .

I believe it is to keep any potential sparks generated at the dead negative terminal away from the battery when you connect it, (there's apparently a risk of fire/explosion from vapours coming from the battery vents).
Not sure if it's as important nowadays with maintenance free/sealed ones, but I'm sure there's still a small vent hole on them all.
I understand it's also important to connect jump leads in the right order - to minimise the risk of accidentally shorting them together or against the car body/engine.

Unlike the D3, the D4 has a voltage sensor between the earth terminal of the battery and the earthing point, which is why you shouldn't connect anything that draws a largish current directly to the negative terminal. Use the earthing point in front of the battery.

but what about the opposite situation is this including when you jump someone else then? That was my main question. I would have thought it safer to follow this then too? It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Yes, whether your drawing or feeding current to the battery.
