standard jack test - horror
Hi all,
Today, after reading a lot on the standard jack, I did the test. I lifted the car twice (back wheel) and each time, although the jack was initially vertical, it started to lean over towards the back of the car as soon as both wheels were in the air (which automatically happens when you want to lift the back wheel). On my second trial it was tilting so much, that the car would fall at every time. Only the peg (this ones enters a hole in the frame) in the top of the jack avoided this. After quickly lowering the jack untill the wheels were touching the ground, I took a picture. Please refer to my gallery.
I am quite shocked about this. It was in my garage on a flat and even floor, the car standing perfectly horizontal and fully braked. I can not imagine having to lift the car under non-ideal circumstances.
Does anybody have similar or other experiences?
Unfortunately, there is no cheap alternative to the jack that fits somewhere in the side storage places of the car, is there?

Hi Captain_Sugar,
Just wondering if you had placed the supplied wheel chocks on the opposite wheels, may help preventing the vehicle from creeping forward when the jack lifts. (as per hand book).

I have changed my wheels quite a few times and although I now use a trolley jack I always used the LR jack before.
My drive has quite a gradient on it and I can honestly say I never had any problems with the jack leaning.
Did you start with the car in off road height?Zermatt silver 06 reg.

No i didn't. I thought these wouldn't be necessary on a flat and hard surface. I thought they are extra safety devices. Moreover, when the parking brake is on, the car doesn't move. At all.

My first idea was that you should put the suspension in the locked access height (garage level). But I never tried out if the wheels articulate when lifted.

Check your hand book before you use the jack.
The car needs to be in offroad mode and you need to use the wheel chocks aswell, Autos need to be in park, Manual cars in reverse I think check with the hand book.
I've never had a problem with the standard jack and I have used it to change over all 4 wheels tho it does take some time to do.

Changed all 4 wheels on Wife's D3 couple of times with standard jack & no issues. Even left each corner up for 10 mins to hose down around wheel hub (axle stands under frame just in case). I did it from Off Road height & with chock in diagonally opposite wheel & car did creep against chocks such that chock could only be taken out when jack was fully removed. Try it this way to see how it does.
