Under body rattle **SORTED**
Morning all,
Have done a good bit of reading on suspension / under body rattles but can't find anything that sounds specifically like I am experiencing.
When traveling a relatively low town speeds and hitting pot holes or bumps with the windows down there is a clearly audible rattle coming from the underside of the car, can't isolate if it is front or rear but if you drop the passenger side window you get the same sound at same volume (so to speak)
It almost sounds like stones on metal or a sort of quick frequency ticking.
Any views on potential causes?
Cheers

Can't help with probable causes but interested to see what others come up with - I have exactly the same problem as you. I've lived with it for months and nothing seems to have dropped off yet.....

It sounds like it could be a loose heat shield, they often come loose or corrod around the bolts and drop down
I have the same noise on mine too, my thoughts mirrored those of camelrock, having just toured France for 3 weeks, the noise remains and nothing has fallen off, I have gone back to my default position having owned many Landrover products...

do you mean the heat shield at the back by the spare wheel? Or am I imagining that there is a heat shield there

Is this an easy check or does it need to be on a ramp / up on stands?
Cheers

Should be a relatively easy check.....screws corroded on the wifes car and the heat shield made a helluva racket.....most things under a car are heavyweight but the heat shield is more like a tinfoil roasting tray(best description I could think of ) so it makes more of a rattle than most things when it comes loose....not sure on the Disco but cant imagine it would be much different."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Heat shields pretty much the full length of the car. Put it into off road setting and crawl underneath. Go down the car until you find the loose one.

Sorted.
Car up on a ramp, checked heat shield bolts front to back but all were tight , pushed, prodded and tapped for about 10 minutes to no avail, I then started tapping the under body surround the heat shield and low the pinking rattle started , I eventually traced it back to the very last bolt on the rear shield immediately in front of the rear axle (up under the exhaust mount).
The bolt was tight however the washer wasn't fully covering the over sized hole, it was causing a very loud 'pink' when pushing the chasis around the area or directly flexing the shield. Fix was easy, just undid the bolt and put on a larger washer to fully cover the hole - 10 mile road test later and all is good with the world.
Now onto the rattle coming from the near side door when the bass on the Logic 7 kicks in
Cheers for the help guys

This is why I love the forum so much, after reading TC's post I went straight to the same bolt and guess what it was not holding the heat shield on at all
Because it was so loose and moving about a lot the hole in the shield was significantly larger than the bolt and washer that was supposed to secure it.
One very large washer later and all sorted
Thanks TC

Don't you just love a fix that costs £0.00
Again, cheers all......application of a washer has made my day
