I was convinced that mine wasn't working properly, until I realised that it was fine with cars overtaking me or that I was overtaking. The lights of the cars right behind me in the same lane as me were shining on to the middle headrest in row 2, which was casting a shadow over the LDR (light-dependent resistor) at the bottom of the mirror, meaning it undimmed whenever cars were right behind me. I took the headrest out, and now it works perfectly.
Usually I noticed that my mirror gets dark each time I open the doors cause the interior light is very close to the mirror. Try switch on the interior lights and see if there is any difference.'05 LR3 HSE V8 - Adriatic Blue - Larini Exhaust System - Lamp Guards - Dual battery system - Hidden 12k winch - Rasta Sump Guard

Well mine works fine - just driving it in the dark and picking up someone behind you and you can see that the reflection is darker than looking throug the wing mirrorsSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I finally got round to sorting mine out today.
I removed the middle headrest, and got out a hacksaw. Using the hacksaw I cut 2 new notches in the headrest support bars, one on each, approx 1 inch higher than the highest existing one. The headrest can then be reinstalled.
Anyway, the result is that the headrest can now be adjusted approx 1 inch lower than is normally possible, and no longer casts a shadow over the rear view mirror.
Total time taken should be no more than 5 minutes.IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver
