Buy 19 or 17 inch wheels is the best bet. To be fair, unless you do a lot of off road work I wouldn't bother. I do a reasonable amount and a highish on road mileage and haven't bothered. I too tow most of the year and certainly wouldn't switch tyres for that. Others may disagree but the tyre difference isn't so much in the UK, in that most places will be do able with standard rubber, although you will be more puncture prone than the MTR / AT tyres with armoured walls.

The 285/60/18 Nitto Terra Grapplers are quite good.
Here is a shot of mine in action

These tyres have a different circumference than the 255/60/18's which are mounted standard.
I guess the navi system is messed up with that, isn't it?
And the speed indication becomes a mathematical problem.

Found this site useful to try and see what the difference in circumference is in any 2 different tyre sizes:

I feel the D3 is capable enough for my style of off roading (far from hard core) . Where I became uncertain of getting stuck with the previous car, an x-trail, I feel the D3 doesn't have any problem with that.
And therefor, I chose to bet on safe on-road tyres. All by all, I spend 95% on road. Therefore sacrificing a lot more on safety at 100miles/hour on the german highway is not accurate.
And changing wheels for a weekend trip is not what I'll be likely to do frequently....
On the nissan I had Wrangler AT's. Driving 100miles/h in an X-trail is something you do only once....
I drive on my property where the ground is very slippery and sticky: some sort of yellow clay. If you walk in it you get feet like elephants...

At the moment the only way to have AT or MT tyres on the 18" wheels is to go oversize (275/65/18) with something like the cooper ST or STT . The Nitto tyres arn't avalable here in the uk.
There is another option the genral grabber AT2 they are coming out in the correct size for the D3 but it looks like not untill sometime next year.
I've got the cooper STT's on my 18" wheel as I do some offroading and they are very good but they do rub a little on the rear arches and I would guess the ST's would do the same, also the STT's are noisy on-road tho I don't notice it much now.
If you want a all round tyre wait for the AT2 to come out they are suppose to be very good and have a good life on them too.
