Hand Brake Squealing!!

More info learned from the LRE at Eastnor last weekend.

In the past and mostly after driving thru water, I have had a squealing noise from sometimes my front and sometimes my back brakes.

I put it down to small stones lodged in between the disk and the shield.

Sometimes it cleared quickly, others not.

The same thing happend at Eastnor last weekend. the instrustor said it is a knowncondition, the easy way to remedy it he said, was stop backup a few hundred yards and then drive off.

It worked on the Disco 3 we had at Eastnor over 5 times anyway!!

However he did also warn us that there is a know mechanical problem with the Electric Hand Brake mechanisim.

Basically if you pull the switch and get a squeal as the brake operates there is a mechnical fault, which land rover know off and can fix under warranty.

My own car has never done that, but the Disco 3 we drove at the weekend did, we were advised not to use the handbrake as it could stick on, on that car untill it is repaired.

Worth knowing I geuss.

Nigel, yes this is well known by LR. The reversing on the LRE day vehicle is actually as you thought to get particals out of the brakes that lodge. If you dont, they get trapped and scour the brakes.

This is the only real problem I have with mine, squealing brakes which I've supposedly had fixed by the dealers but have since started squealing again, not sure whether its grit or something more sinister re: the EPB - I'm just waiting a bit longer to see if it gets worse or happens more often.

Same up here in N.Yorks.

No rivers forded or beaches traversed but corrosion particles in rear disk hubs, caused hand brake squeel.

New rear disk/hub units fitted under waranty. My dealer's admitted to 'doing a few already'

So can we expect it to happen again??

Isn't it bizarre though that despite all these problems we all still absolutely love the vehicle, its so frustrating though at times that our enthusiasm is dulled by LR's apparent disinterest - not very good PR in my opinion Evil or Very Mad

Dom, I still love the Series 1. It was the most uncomfortable, draughty, wet, noisy, tinny, underpowered but loveable LR built. Then came the series 2, uncomfortable, draughty, wet, noisy, tinny, underpowered and then came the series 3, uncomfortable, draughty, wet, noisy, tinny, underpowered, but then came the TD5, comfortable, draughty, wet, noisy, tinny, reasonably powered and I loved them all Then came nothing, so I bought the D3 Very Happy

OK, guests, go and buy one yourself, then you will see, it is Very Happy

Dom,

I can only endorse your comment!!!

I love it to bits – as I have with every other Land Rover product I've owned. Wouldn’t be sitting here with the laptop, glass of wine (we’re dead posh in Chester you know) agreeing with you…

You don’t own a Land Rover… You live with it!!!
