Is This Normal - Auto Gear Box? |
|
Living in south Essex my Disco3 HSE Auto never gets on the open road until I've crawled through traffic and everything has warmed up. Away for a few days and staying just off the A1(Cromwell, Newark ), and have noticed that from cold the gear box doesn't drop into 6th gear until it has warmed up (for approximately a mile or two) and during this warm-up period, even at speeds of 60 miles per hour, if I take my foot off the throttle the revs drop to tick over, and the car is effectively free-wheeling. If I go to Command Shift I can manually change it into 6th gear, and then if I change it back into auto mode, it remains in 6th and that cancels out the free-wheeling and I get engine braking, and every things works normally. The car has done 26K miles, is a 2008 MY 2.7 diesel, never goes off road or subjected to deep water, and is in next month for its 4-year service at LR Yeovil. Does this sound like they may have some additional work to do? ( I have Land rover extended warranty I am glad to say )
I don't think it is suffering from a siezed selector pivot as there is no stiffness on the selector and the vehicle appears to run perfectly. Any advice on whether this is right or not would be gratefully appreciated.

Think it is normal, a lot of autos hold the revs higher until warmed up

Absolutely normal Gear box wont 'Lock Up' until it is up to temp.
You will also note that if you use CS from the outset, cold, you can get into 6th at just over 40MPH and the revs will be up at about 2000, if you then keep to about 50 ish the revs drop back when the temp gauge reaches about 1/4 way. I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Thanks Hobgoblin:
It still concerns me that I can be doing 65 mph in auto from cold, take my foot off the throttle, the revs drop to about 800 and I am effectively coasting. As soon as I engage command shift and then change back into auto, the coasting ceases although it is still cold. I shall monitor the situation, as they say
