Gear change sound/vibration - can anyone help?

Hi all.

Searched forum and also had local indy road test but can't identify a small but slowly growing and worrying noise/vibration.

Does anyone have any possible cause they might think it could be, please?

Once warmed-up, In either D or Sport D, When it feels like it changes from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, not sure which
90% of the time, but mainly when I slow down in traffic to a crawl and then gently accelerate (it's as I just start to accelerate again that it happens)

I get

Very slight sound plus smooth vibration, (not grinding) for split half a second felt through auto gear lever/selector and the sound is what I can only describe as a very slight smooth fart (don't laugh!), or slight rub.

Happens when one of the low gears changes up, I think when changing from one of the gears to another. Happens only once through the acceleration stages.

Any ideas welcome.

PS. I'm getting a preventative gear box oil change done next week as I'm not sure when the previous owner had it done/if. Do you think it would be good to get a power flush instead or to suggest the indy uses any particular oil/synthetic you could recommend. If at all this might be related?

Thanks

LR states that the gearbox is sealed for life which is nonsence. It could well be that the oil never has been changed. I would surely recommend a double flush, ultrasonic clean and changing the PAN filter.
Also have your old ATF tested for glycol. Some of us have experienced a radiator leak causing glycol to get mixed with the ATF.

Also the torque converter for this type of ZF box has known issues.

Cheers Renton for your knowledgable reply. Appreciated.

Do you think the lubricants can cause such a noise if worn down or dirty? I'm sure the flush would be a good first step anyway to see if it goes away.

Would also be interested to hear if anyone else out there has had or know for the same symptom.

Thumbs Up

Old or wrong ATF will surely cause problems.

The ATF is quiet expensive so just changing the ATF without a double flush or changing the PAN could leave you with the same issues and a few 100 pounds poorer. If you get it done do it properly.

The most common complains are: slipping clutch, juddering when accelerating or under load and revs surging.

Maybe a knackered drive shaft could contribute to these symptons.

Confused now!

Just booked the D3 in into a new 4x4 specialist reccomended round the corner. Place full up with RRs, D3s and defenders etc so should know their stuff.

When I called to ask when to pick it up from having some bits done inc a full transmission oil/fluid change they said it's a sealed unit and it can't be changed. They said even LR say it's a sealed unit and can't be touched.

I'M REALLY CONFUSED NOW!!!... anyone able to clarify?

LR say it's a 'Sealed for life' unit. But their service schedule states that the Fluid should be changed at 150,000.

It's changed the old traditional way by changing the AutoBox filter pan (yes, there is one that your 'indi' should know about) and running two lots of fluid through to try to get the old oil out.

OR get a Megaflush done which will just disconnect your ATF cooler pipes & then flush through 97% of your oil with new oil. Much cheaper than paying for 2 x lots of LR oil.

There are other spec oils which have the same general spec (millermatic for example) but they are not as long life as the shell M1374.5 spec which should be used.
Make sure your people are using the Shell spec & nothing else.

If your indi really has that many people in for repairs, they should know this...... Rolling Eyes

Cheers. Just called and spoken to the far better but further away Berkshire Land Rover who basically agreed with you and said these other people don't know what they are talking about!

Shame as the place is full of LRs and they are down the road but maybe they only feel comfortable with Defenders etc.

I'm going to have to go down there and tell the ar*e scratching meatheads that basically they are wrong. Wish me luck!

When I got there the main chap was so enthusiastic about his 'knowledge' that I felt uncomfortable challenging him on it to be honest. I told him everyone else says they do it and he said 'well, it may be that LR don't recommend it but other people just go ahead and do it, but LR claim the sealed unit will loose pressure if it's touched'.

Getting a proper flush hopefully soon. My problem is minor and I was initially having the maintenance as preventative, but it will be nice if it cures the vvvbbbbb sound.
