Locking of messages and what content is allowed on this site

Not wanting to start a huge argument here but......

Can the site admin explain why a thread containing a link to the Sun website last night was locked without allowing discussion.
I looked at the page last night which made me go via google to look at their web site with interest, I was amazed to see the story unfold regarding the hacked site.

The fact that such a big web site can be hacked must surely be news worthy to this discussion group so why was such disscussion halted?

Am I missing something here?
Apologies if I am being thick?

I think at the time, the fact that the Sun had been hacked was not immediately known to Martin, but this was quickly established to be the case. Martin locked the thread immediately, and it seems that the original poster then tried to edit the locked thread. Unable to do so he messaged Martin. At the time it was the appropriate thing to do.

We don't want to help spread false news that involves the alleged death of someone, no matter how bad the public perceive them to be.

By all means start a new thread about the rights and wrongs of hacking of a newspapers website.

I would have thought the correct thing to do would be to report the fact that the Sun had been hacked for all to see rather than lock the message, or at least suggest that might have been the case.

There is a fine line beween good intentions and censorship Confused

Hey what do I know, I'm a thick copper.

I think the original intention of the OP was to spread the rumour about RM's untimely demise, not the fact that the Sun had been hacked!

That's the way I interpreted it anyway. Not only do we get accused of censorship, we could also get accused of slander and misrepresentation, so it is indeed a fine line we walk. 8)

If in doubt

If in doubt... BLOCK IT OUT!

why take a chance, I would not with my website

As 4x4 owners we are already persecuted by enough people without adding any due to a posting here.

If deemed unfounded after a quick PM then the thread could be restarted. no loss

Hi Daz,

It's a touch more complicated than preventing discussion of the matter...

The original post was made by Discotres at 10.36pm in the "General" forum, and titled "MURDOCH DEAD" and the content "n.m".

I moved the thread to OTPP.

Whilst I investigated what was going on the thread remained unlocked. Using Twitter as my primary source for "real time" events, I discovered the Sun's site had been hacked and was redirecting to a 3rd party page containing a spoof article. Upon returning to DISCO3, DT had edited his post to include a photograph of the spoof article.

Some background: DT has been asked by me a few times to keep his postings on this site tidy, as there has been the tendency to "flood" the forum with links to newspaper articles. He has been asked NOT to start a new thread each time he sees something he believes is of interest, but to keep to existing topics where possible. In this instance there was already a running Rupert Murdoch thread which this should have been added to.

I therefore assumed this was a wind up by DT, combined with his posting in the "General" and not in "Off Topic", and starting a new thread when he's been specifically asked not to do so. So I locked the thread and posted my message at 10.52pm. DT started another new thread, this time in OT, with a further photo of the hacked Sun web site.

A few PMs then flew about between DT and myself, the result of which was the discovery that he didn't originally know the Sun's site had been hacked, and thought it was genuine. There was also some further discussion in the existing Murdoch thread here: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post818546.html#818546

So, in this case it's not "what content is allowed", but by whom it was posted and where it! It immediately appeared to be posted to irritate me/the mods, given what had been asked previously.

I'm more than happy for the hacking of the Sun's web site to be discussed, but that's not what the thread in question was started to do Smile

DT thought it was genuine? Discovered in the headline spelled "discoverd"? Death from ingestion of palladium ? (not wheel cleaning paste) Famous topiary garden?
Really?

Hindsight is a great thing Lex, I guess you are perfect as you always have a go at me, it does get tiresome, are you insecure? Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I read the first half of the story and it seemed genuine especially as it was on the front page of The Sun, my ipad didn't see any redirection as it was so fast, I checked the Sky news and nothing was there, believing that it had just been released as I did notice the timings, although admit I missed the date on the first scan of it, I posted it here.

IF it had been true and such a huge story, posting it in the existing forum it would have been lost, I thought if it stayed in the general forum for a while people could see it and it could then be moved.

Now for anyone on here to put hand on heart and say that if they saw something on the front page of a national newspaper (excluding April 1st) they would double and triple check, well good for you, you are perfect.

For me, it's a hands up and lesson learnt just not to bother in future even if trying to give the forum a 'scoop', unfortunately it was a few minutes later I realised what happened, but too late, the thread was locked.

It's not the end of the world, but does give people something to moan about, so maybe not a bad thing, better than watching paint dry whilst waiting for your D3 to conk out Laughing

So apologies to Martin for having to move a post, but I do beleive some of my fantastic posts more than make up for a minor error last night Whistle

we can all make mistakes and some more than others only because in their hast to be helpful didnt check further details, unless it's causing issues within the Database then what others deem as pointless/useless can be ignored but it does seem that DT post get's more (bad) attention than others.

me; I check for new post and if it's not a subject that catches my attention then I skip over it, as to the poster of topics then that would be just as easy to skip (BTW I decide on subject content, not poster) and as to what appears to be in-house "discussions" they sometimes can be more entertaining than real post Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

I find this forum so informative at many levels Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

it hurt

the sauce demo was a BIG mistake (afterwards) it's taken hours on the day to recover and even with the small amount DT sent I just wiped onto ham to cook for sandwiches, they hurt eating them even with salad and cheese in them.

the sensation developed over time, but was worth the trouble to say hi to you all Thumbs Up
