Brake disc temperatures.......is this normal ?

Can anyone with a D3 or D4 and an infra red thermometer help me out please Laughing Over the last year the front and rear discs and pads on my D3 have been replaced, the caliper pistons seemed to retract normally, when I did this work, and the sliders are all lubed and pads movable in the shims, and on the rear, the park brake shoes are not rubbing. But if I drive for say 12 miles only using the brakes for the occasional set of traffic lights, when I reach my destination, the front brake discs show about 50 deg C, and the rears about 48 deg C. Should they be this hot from just light friction or are the caliper pistons in fact holding the pads too tightly against the discs ? I know the calipers can be a problem, but not really sure whether this is normal or not, as the car will roll freely with the brakes off in neutral with a very slight slope on the road. I'd be grateful for any advice from others, sorry for the epic Embarassed Thanks.

I've measured mine recently as I had an issue.

Fronts were running around 55 C, rear 38 C. I had a sticky caliper and the disc was 115 C. Measured with an infrared thermometer and I have V8 discs and carrier all round. That was driving normally on country roads.

From my readings it would seem percentage wise your rears are slightly higher.

Thanks armalites, I too think the rears are getting hotter than they used to be, although they are the ones that have been replaced only recently (standard Tdv6), not sure if they will get better or worse when they have worn in a bit. May have to consider new calipers....Thumbs Up

Hi DN

A quick update, my wife has just got back, 10 mile drive country lanes so took another reading and the rears are hotter then the fronts !

So I guess you have nothing to worry about, when I had a dragging caliper I could feel it holding back and the gearbox changing down at low speed.
