2007 TDV6 HSE with dead engine, needs replacing! |
|
Hi Guys, can I pick your brains on this one?
I have the oppertunity to buy a Disco HSE TDV6 Auto with a U/S Engine
Financially I would have to try and source a second hand engine for it, however how many variants of the 2.7 are there? Do they carry differing part numbers?
Having driven many of these I know there is a different feel to the 07 MY engine than earlier ones, in that they sound different when starting and dont idle lumpy temporarily when first started like earlier cars they are also smoother across the rev range, was this a different EU variant? Does anyone know whats technically different from 07 plate onwards with this engine as wouldnt want to buy the wrong engine, they seem to go second hand for £2,000 upwards??
Secondly I understand the body needs to come off to do the engine change, is this just a false economy project with the amount of work needing to go into it? I dont know wether its best left where it is or isnt as much hassle as it sounds, any opinions from anyone in the know? I dont want to start a project that becomes an minefield, apparently the original engine was starved of oil

07 is an euIV engine. Body lift is only a few bolts and some connectors. Youl need a two post lift or a couple of forklifts
Whether it's worth it depends on how much it'll cost to buy and then the engine to fit.
What spec? Bodsys Brake Bible

Its a bit more involved than a few bolts and connectors, but can be off in 2-3 hours. Certainly not difficult anyway...
As for diffences between the engine, the basic block and heads are the same, but almost everything bolted to it is different...
Off the top of my head...
HPFP + fuel pipes
CCV/Breather system
Wiring loom
Cooling system
EGR coolers
Injectors (but are usable between different MY's)
Pretty sure that things like alternator, starter, turbo etc are the same however
Depends really on how much you are getting the car for, and if you have access to someplace you can lift the body off
FWIW, you can change the engine without lifting the body, however, it is a major PITA, and not worth the hassle IMO My D3 Build Thread

Yes it is just 10 little old bolts that hold it together, but there are a bucket load of connecting bits that go between the two halves. Having watched it being doen I wouldn't want to do it on my own without someone who had done it before.
I just bought a second hand 2006 engine for £2250 and then to replace it at a specialist (thanks Disco_Mikey) was another £2800 ish, but that included about £1000 on a new clutch and brake pipes. So if you can get it at the right price, then it will be worth while and shouldn't take more than a week or so. Joined the BMWX5 45e group
