I recently had the turbo problem,
Looked around for new turbo prices, the differences in price was unbelievable
Anyway long story short, I phoned an Indy expecting the worst, to be told it would be probably not be the turbo, but would be the actuator. He can replace them in 2 hours, cost £80.00.
True to his word it was done in less than that.
I always thought the turbo had to be removed to replace the actuator. That was a good day
Two weeks later I had to replace the 2 front wheel bushes a bad day
Ive just had a quote from an official LR garage. £750 if its the actuator or £2400 to replace the turbo.
RMB, please can you PM me with details of the Indy ? many thanks

Anywhere between 6 and 10 hours, depending on seizures etc.

Dreaded Actuator Seizure
Hi
Rod has seized and garage looking for big bucks to replace or repair. They've tried to un-seize through the wheel arch but not successful. I've read on some forums that the replacement rod can be changed in situ without removing turbo. Is this possible and how? Anybody know any indy or specialist that has attempted this successfully in Kent.
Other Jeopardy is that mine is an 05 model and believe that the replacement service kit only fits 06 onwards? Anything that I can look for to know whether its the original 05 turbo or a later replacement?
any help appreciated

It can be fitted in situ, but you need the hands of a 5 year old.

Im going to a specialist in Kent who will try to free off the actuator, but Im guessing the best long term option is to replace the rod and link.
Anybody know an indy or specialist with hands of a 5 year old who will attempt it. RMB earlier in the post found one, but it appears Im too new to PM RMB directly
thanks

Turbo
Hi Gents.
A lot of people got the turbo problem..
I was lucky and found an great Indy in Scotland who can change the actuator with out removal of turbo.
I asked him if I could place his name on Disco3 site, but I am afraid he said no.
The man is a great mechanic and is always very busy, and I know what its like when you get no down time. So I am sticking to the agreement with him.
SORRY GUYS, if I could I would.

I decided to have a go myself. With a bit of liberal swearing managed to un-clip and remove the battery tray and decided to go all in and remove the shields under the wheel arch.
As I had no real idea what I was doing or looking for it took me a while but end result is I now have a free'd up actuator that goes through its full cycle
In my opinion, removing the battery tray was great as it opened the space up and allowed a lot more light in, however going in from the wheel arch with a meat skewer (the round shaped non-pointy end) and long screwdriver did the business
Hope this inspires somebody to have a go and not get hammered by a hugely unnecessary bill for a new turbo

Actuator Arm
Hi Clubcars - can I ask if you just free'd up the arm or replaced it with the new kit you can get?? Like you I am a novice and wondered where you found the instructions to do this.
IIRC the turbo has to come out for the kit to be fitted.
It can be a DIY job, with patience.Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Dont think the replacement kits fit the early turbos. I just pushed and pulled on the ball end at the end of the turbo arm until it moved and then kept going with lots of wd40 sprayed in the general direction.

OK - yes I have had the actuator loosened like this and on short journeys I don't ever have a problem. Its only when the cars loaded and I have been driving for more than 3.5 hours that it seems to have the loss of power. Its worse if I use the cruise control as well, so I have stopped using it for long journeys. So by fitting the kit, I thought it might be a more permanent solution. My VIN no is SALLAAA175A30831* - does anyone know if the kit LR023086 might permanently solve the problem?
I've blanked the EGR's, fitted the BAS remap kit and it goes like a dream. However on a long journey, when I have loss of power I have to switch off the engine to reset the software and then its OK again - this is sometimes the only option I have when the traffic is busy and I am in the fast lane, as sometimes the power loss is so fast its quicker to do this than try and get across to the hard shoulder - yes I know I shouldn't be doing this, but when you are going up hill, dropping from 80-60 and you have 6 HGV's on the inside, what do you do?
We've just come back from a family Camping Trip in France, when it happened several times and I am under pressure to get rid of it from the boss! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks clubcars - you are right it does not fit MY05 - I suppose I'll just have to get the WD40 out?!
