Air Conditioning Fault

Hoping someone can shed some light. I have my disco 3 in for its 73,000 service at mo and obviously the waranty was out this time last year so it seems as though landrover are cashing in on it now. I requested that the air-con be regased due to it not functioning correctly since the back end of last summer. They phoned me up and informed me that it had a leak and would need a repair and that would increase the price from the £30 quoted to £80 which i agreed to. They phoned me back again later that day to inform me it needed a pipe replacement that had corroded and that the cost would be around £500.00!

Surely a Landrover that is only 4 years old can not be expected to have corroded pipes on a system they were designed for can they??? And £500.00 surely there having a laugh!

I have a 54 plate D3 and at only 5 years old I had corroded pipes for the rear air con unit, the pipes are held in by clips, and these clips tend to hold the water and corrode the pipes, can't believe they don't make them out of stainless steel as for the rear air con they run along the chassis. The pipes are expensive but £500 does sound a bit OTT.

this is how I feel that my three year old 30k mile D3 with a failed auto gear shift
in my opinion the durability is distressing me...the fitness for purpose just isnt there for what is supposed to be a utility vehicle.
These & other parts should last the "life" of the vehicle...this happens on lower cost vehicles that are used for far in ecess of the miles / age we have done.
Land Rover ought to stand over their product.....pressure from a site like this ought to pressure them into some action

Having the same discussion with my stealership over a leaky AC pipe on my 08!

It's been in three times for AC, twice under warranty, one out, and here I am with it still leaking Evil or Very Mad

'That'll be $700' was the message from service.....

I have just had my 06 pipe repaired because they had corroded and had it regassed for £160 by a mobile aircon specialist

doesn't help you, but gives you an idea of pricing

I am having the HP and LP front to rear airconditioning pipes replaced as the HP one has been holed by chaffing on its securing bracket just behind the NS front wheel arch (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic50717.html?highlight=Aircon).

Cool Auto (aka Graham Stobbs) who is doing the work has priced the job at just over £300 but that does include a full AC service (see his website for details - http://www.coolauto.co.uk/) and the pipes alone (which come as an assembly) cost £152.

It's a shame that the car's designers didn't give more thought as to the routing of these pipes let alone the material from which they are made Evil or Very Mad

Just waiting for Graham to find the time to come and get my aircon working again! It's bad enough having to drive to work and back with the sunroof/windows open now that spring seems to have finally arrived. I'm just hoping he can fit me in before the 29th as towing the tintent to Cornwall with no aircon won't be very nice Sad
 Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills Smile

Any idea what he did to repair the pipe?

Dealers here seem to want to replace rather than repair - so I'm interested in how a repair might be fabricated?

my d3 air con lost its gas when i checked it out i found that the pipe at the bottom of the condeser. it had worn through on a bit of sponge? was told i could solder it up but i replaced it £89.00 + vat from famouse four at louth was told that it was the most comon fault easy fit to do then regas job done mine is a 54 plate hse diseal check bottom left of air con rad/ condenser with front grill off look for foam sponge rubbing on bend at base of the pipe from condenser thats what naffed mine up Censored
 always up to somert usualy no good acording to swmbo

Can anyone help...I've got a 54 plate D3 V8 with "climate control". Putting the temperature down to 16 doesn't produce the icy cold temperature that my old D2 could - is this normal? Give me back my icicle button!! I had it checked at its last service and the computer wasn't reporting any problems. Anyone else come across this?

If it has never been re-gassed then it will be in desperate need for it, I think they can lose 10-15% gas each year, and from my experience it does not take much loss of gas to affect the performance. Best to have it checked for leaks

I have an annual issue with mine, as soon as it gets hot it really struggles, but I tend to forget about it as soon as the Sun goes away !. I know many people rate the LR Climate Control but I am still seeking a resolution, so will keep you posted.

One thing you could try is getting a car thermomenter with an external sensor, and then put the sensor just inside the air vent , so you can monitor the performance of different settinngs. I have found that if you have the fan set more than the 4th setting , then the temperature coming into the cabin goes up slightly as the air has not got time to cool as it is passing over the evaporator.

The other thing to do is make sure it is on re-circulate, althhough mine does not make a huge amount of difference.

Thanks for your advice Dave. I'll give it a go on the way home. It was regassed in April, and the garage didn't report any leaks .... That's not to say they didn't miss something of course!

if you take it to a kwik fit they will re-gas for £49 but if the find a leak you don't pay anything,kwik fit will not do repairs on air-con

A simple re-gas may not do the trick. Get the job done properly by someone who knows what they are doing as they will drain the system, pressure test it and leak test it. Only if all is well will it then be re-charged. The chap who did mine had all sorts of stuff connected to mine during the course of the service.
