All,
Taking delivery of the new D3 today, in Melbourne...
Something I've been wondering about - how good is the front recovery point - which I gather is hidden behind some plastic shrouding? Is it a recovery point, or just a tow point? Anyone snatched of it? Any replacment options?
cheers,
Simon D3 - Buckingham Blue, SE, TDV6, 06 model; chipped; underbody armour; Mickey Thompson ATZ 275/65-18 AND MAXXIS Bighorn muddies; rear wheel carrier from 4x4intelligence.com; iPOD aux connection! GME 3200 UHF - aerial mounted on wheel carrier ; LR roof rails/cross bars; Autosafe cargo barrier, Safari Snorkel; Traxide - aux battery; ARB bull bar with Tigerz11 winch; Lightforce 240 XGT driving lights (mitchell bros tow hitch to come)

Simon it is a ridgy didge recovery point. With an ARB bar it is left exposed for easier access.
Enjoy this afternoon........ We wont' hear from you for a while now as you won't be out of the vehicle.

Simon,
I was snatched up a slippery hill using it. Works fine. Recovery vehicle was a Defender 130 with F&R air lockers with Simex's so it wasn't embarrasing.
BTW. If you were picking up your D3 from MLR today we could have crossed paths. Mine was in for it's 18 month service.
PICs are required otherwise it isn't true.
Enjoy your D3.

I've been told you could hang the D3 (all 2.8 tonnes) off the front and rear points. Matt

did a safety course at work for confined spaces and you could hang a weight of say 100kg from a rope but if you drop it the shock force makes the object closer to a ton. a bit like trying to break twine by pulling, it's easier to to snap at it. read on here that you can twist the chassis (TFC I think) if it's not a direct pull.

Now that I own a D3 manual I have read that the std recovery points are for ON-ROAD recovery only... read that LR does not rate them for off-road snatches...
Similar to the D2, they worked - to a point - I've seen many seriously distorted D2 std recovery points that could have caused serious damage if used for much longer.
I'll be working on a replacement me thinks...
cheers,

mmm the manual clearly suggests you remove the plastic covers and put the spare in the boot / trunk prior to going off road in case of recovery or flat

Read where? .....also there is no real alternative and it is a rated point that I have seen used off-road without consequence on several occasions........also snatches are a nasty method of recovery aren't they? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Again there's this obsession with snatch recoverys, why?
Snatching will always be a last resort in my book, even then I probably wouldn't do it, there's far safer/less damaging ways to recover a stuck vehicle The End
