speed camera detectors

Have been out of the uk for sometime, & when I left it was suggested that "active" speed camera detectors as opposed to GPs ones, were to become illegal this summer.
Has this happened?

Nope, ISTR that some judge ruled that they were legal as anything that made people slow down was a good thing Confused

well by virtue of the fact they are still on sale i would suggest they are not illegal.

personal choice would be the origin product... will get one one day when finances allow.

If they are made illegal halfords etc. would be selling them off dirt cheap or would have withdrawn them from the shelves or would have to advise purchasers they are illegal to use in the uk.

also worth reading as I have just found out:

You can always have the unusual situation of a product being legal to sell, but illegal to use. i.e. transmitters for music players, such as ipods. I rely on the police having more important things to check road users for, like 134cm-tall children under 12 not sitting on Euro-approved plastic banquettes.... Wink

Hi all!

I use a radar detector because here (czech) it is still legal. It is illegal in most european countries, but according to http://www.radarshop.com/radardetector.aspx?w=faq
it is legal in the UK!

I have Beltronics and they work fine. i was recommended not to buy the cheapest ones because your car will sound like a casino.

Do not buy a car fitted installation as you might get problems abroad or if the law changes! Go for the version sucked to the windshield.

In Belgium, an owner of a Porche Cayenne almost lost his complete car because he had an antiradar (not radar-detector) permanently fitted in his car. Because it is illegal to use, sell and even own it in Belgium, and since it was permanently fixed to his car, his complete darling became illegal. But happy end, the man did not loose his car after all.

In the UK can own abd use a radar detector legally as long as you do not detect police radars with your device Laughing

So make sure to switch it of when checked by police.

By the way, I heard police can detect whether you have a detector in your car or not, at least that's what I heard. It seems funny to me because it does only receive radio waves and does not emit anything. That they can detect it with the device switched of is even more copperfield style...
If anybody knows details on this, please let me know!
thanks

you may be getting confused with lazer jammers. they do emit a signal when the receive one from the speedgun to 'confuse' it into giving an error and thus not being able to record the actual speed. Thse are illegal and would normally have a switch to turn them off once you had reduced your speed.... and yes the police do get a specific error code from a jammed reading.

There are laser AND radar jammers.

To avoid laser checks with more than 10% success rate you need a jammer. Once your laser detector (most radar detectors detect as well lasers) detects the laser, you have been measured. Too late. The only way a laser detector helps you is when it detects the car next to your's is being measured and you might be the next one that the police will point it's laser at.

To avoid radar checks with a 95% success rate a laser detector AND a reasonable speed is enogh.
If you race the streets, from the moment of receiving the radar alarm, you will probably not have enough distance to slow down your vehicle enough before it will be measured. In such a case, jamming is the only way to get your cayenne not measured. As Discovery drivers, I believe the driving behaviour of the car makes us drive automatically more civilized
Wink

I guess all jammers are illegal ...

I think that it you have an automatic garage door opener (the radar type). The waves that are emitted from your car mounted door opener actually blocks the signal from police gun. Obviously you will have to fit one of these devices to the front and rear of your car.
