Rear locking differential question

Rear locking differential question

I am thinking about picking up a demo unit at the dealer. One feature I would like would be the rear locking differential. Is it something that needs to be installed at the factory level or can it be added after the fact (in case the demo model does not have it)? Sorry for the n00b post but, I'm not a very mechanical guy (more of a techie)

(The need for the Locking differential is because of my driveway) We get alot of snow in the winter and I need something that will help my LR4 move up the driveway in almost any condition.

The D3 is factory install only and I assume the D4 would be the same, somebody that actually knows will be along soon to confirm or deny
 Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!

Why do you want it?
Many people on here say it will get you nowhere more than without it, it will only save you some wheelspin.

Personally I don't have the experience (whilst I do have an active rear diff) but I'm sure it is a costly option.

That is the main reason. The big hill in the winter, its a 40degree inclline.

Thats not a hill it's gentle slop and the standard D3/4 will cope with it easily.

you wont need a rear locking diff to climb that hill - you wont even need to change your tyres Thumbs Up

unless you intend to do quite a lot of offroad driving then you wont need it.

However, if you can find one with it fitted its there "just in case" Thumbs Up

got a similar hill or worse in Switzerland. Going up is easy-peasy. Only needed low range once when there was sheet ice after it rained on compacted snow. However, going down is much more of a problem......
