BONG - Transmission fault suspension lowering
My D3 did this on Tuesday when towing my loaded 3.5 tonne Ifor Williams trailer
Randomly it would display the usual "Transmission fault, HDC not available, suspension lowering" messages with a bong and warning lights.
Stop, go to sleep, it then resets until a few miles down the road.
The clues seems to be twofold:
1. seems to happen when using the brakes
2. only happened yesterday with the trailer attached. Yesterday it seemed OK solo.
Do my learned friends think that I should start by checking and changing trailer brake lamps?
Or could it be something more sinister?
BTW anyone in this area - NE Essex - got a fault code reader thingy? Cheers, Dave in Essex

Could be bulbs in the trailer or it might be your brake light switch on the pedal..

Thanks Flack for the heads up on that
Been reading similar threads on this forum about this issue. How strange
Going down my barn this morning to test and/or change bulbs on trailer
New brake switch on order with my local Indy supplier.
As a Faultmate owener do you think that fault codes will be shown and/or stored?
Now need to decide whether to splash out on a diagnostic tool. Damn I missed Xmas Cheers, Dave in Essex

Could potentially be a fuel filter, gives similar symptoms. More apparent when towing due to an increase in required fuelMy D3 Build Thread

Thanks for suggesting the fuel filter - I will check on the service history when it was last done
Don't think it is this though because each time it happened the engine was not under any load. Seemed to happen when using the brakes so this will be my line of investigation to start with - suspect the trailer (not very old) brake lamps/circuit
With my previous Disco3 had the under loads issue towing the old tintent over the Pennines
Reduced power etc but didn't lower suspension
The cure was to blank off the EGRs Cheers, Dave in Essex

EDIT: Just read the first post properly...
Yes it was one of your previous posts that got me thinking about the brake switch circuit
This morning have been checking the brake light circuit and brake lamps on my Ifor Williams trailer. It was fitted with "made in Hungary" twin filament jobbies. They 'look' OK (i.e. filaments not touching each other)
The trailer is now fitted with nice new Lucas LLB380 12-21/5w lamps
Unable to replicate the fault this morning.....
Going to pick up a new brake lamp switch this afternoon and go from there Cheers, Dave in Essex

UPDATE - it hasn't done it since last Tuesday!
Yep done loads of miles since last Tuesday when towing the trailer.
The fault has not come back
The dashboard looked like this:
and the 4 x 4 display thus:
Note the 'old git' reading glasses
I still suspect the brake light switch and/or wiring as per Disco_Mikey's previous posts.
New one had not yet arrived at my local suppliers http://www.brit-car.co.uk
However they had all my other new bits and bobs including a new Hawkeye Diagnostic tool
Now just waiting for the unlock code for my vehicle...
I will get to the bottom of this fault Cheers, Dave in Essex

UPDATE: it did it again on Monday!
Just the once in heavy traffic where I was on and off the old brake pedal.
BONG! "Transmission Fault" "Suspension Lowering"
Yesterday I did the following:
1. Read fault codes wiv my new Hawkeye Diagnostic thingy.
one DTC: V0122 "Lost communication with vehicle dynamics control module. Missing message"
DTC cleared. This would fit with the brake light circuit causing a problem
2. Replaced the brake light switch with the new one that Duncan handed to me last night
Easy job. Even Haynes manual details this
3. Replaced ALL the brake lamps with nice new Lucas ones (trailer has been dun)
Interesting that the side lamps below are also twin filament
4. Re-calibrated the steering angle sensor (SAS) it was showing -2.4deg. Some say this causes this fault
While doing this stuff also did a 'hard reset' and charged the battery with my Lidl smart charger (like a CTEK but cheaper)
So far so good but time will tell...... Cheers, Dave in Essex

I had a "transmission fault" issue a couple of weeks ago. It may not be related to your issue at all, but I will share it just in case. I was looking at brake light bulbs, and the brake light switch having read stuff on various forums, but it turned out to be something else.
Mine was stuck in P - it wouldn't let me select a gear. So I cleared the fault by cycling the ignition key 10 times in quick succession - not actually starting the car, but just going to the point where all the dash lights come on and system check starts.
I took it for a drive down to the local dealership and when I stopped it showed a park brake fault.
Not having any diagnostic tool and needing a fairly quick solution I subjected myself to the mercy of the dealership.
They said they felt these were ghost faults due to poor earthing so the first thing they did was fit a modified earth lead. I gather this is just an additional earth strap between the engine and the battery, which they charge an obscene amount of money for.
However, this did solve the "fault" issues, I believe it may also have stopped my after market JVC HiFi from re-booting itself intermittently!

Thanks this is useful to know for those ghost messages when cranking up from cold Cheers, Dave in Essex

Now been a week without problems after doing the fix as per my last posting on this thread
So what could be an expensive, lengthy visit to the main stealers, where dozens of items would be changed until it went away has been fixed thanks to the members of this forum
Now how do they do that sucking air between the teeth saying "It needs a 'full diagnostic', we will need it for a week and it could be expensive" Cheers, Dave in Essex
