It seems that the head unit performs some essential functions on the CAN-bus. The CAN-bus (Controller Area Network) is an electronic communications channel that connects a couple of electronic control units and sensors in the car. The IHU (Integrated Head Unit) apparently is the time keeper on this CAN-bus, removing it will probably seriously disrupt the correct functioning of some essential parts of the car...
Some more info from TFC on the inner workings of these buses can be found in this thread: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post83106.html
For the definitive answer you will probably have to wait until he is back from Morocco... 2006 Zermatt Silver TDV6 'SE' Auto, Mantec sump guard, Frontrunner roofrack, Lightforce 140s, split charge system and... a Jetboil.

Hi,
Does the standard stereo have aux in or aux out connections on the rear?
I am thinking that a Car PC could do everything except radio. With those connectors, it would be easy to link the PC to the stereo.
Cheers.

I also put a post on for upgrading the speakers to the base head unit and wondering if anyone had done it before, so far looks like it has not been done before.
I think I'll keep the base head unit though.
Yes it has an 'aux. in' but is not connect to a socket.
There was another post regarding connecting to the aux in the passenger footwell. do a search for aux.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Thanks. I saw the post about tapping into the aux in via the footwell connector/wire bundle. I was hoping that if there was an "aux out" - I could put the AM/FM signal to the car PC and bypass the stereo altogether!
I am into hifi - building speakers is a major hobby of mine. I will definitely be upgrading the speakers in my SE - but not via car speaker brands. I prefer the hifi brands - Vifa/Peerless, Audax, Focal, Dynaudio, etc.
Looks like I will now have to route audio from the car PC to the aux in on the factory head unit, and then run speaker out to an amp. Shame, as the speaker level inputs introduce more distortion than line level.
Cheers.

Ah! Aux out not in!
I was wanting to get a PDA/GPS and connect via the aux in playing Navigation voice and MP3 files through the stereo.
I was looking at Focals as replacements in fact.
let me know how you get on with your install. Start a new post or post on this:

Rob - I'd be interested to see (hear?) if you feel you have improved on the factory-fit system in the SE. The speakers and amp are carefully tailored to the vehicle at the design stage so, unless you are planning to radically change the speaker/amp installation, I'd be surprised if you get any significant improvements.

Jager24, was your original stereo a low-line (single CD player) or high line?
I'm guessing at low line as the high line has the master clock function
Quote:
The IHU contains the master clock functionality. The
IHU contains and displays the clock in one unit. Other
vehicle modules that require clock functionality use the
time supplied from the IHU.
The clock is available to any control module that is
connected to an interconnecting bus i.e. either of the CAN
busses or the MOST ring.
It is not clear which module (if any) provides the backup clock function

Jager24 we need some info on how it was done...s'il vous plait
You will lose the control of the Info Menu (to change door lock settings etc...) but the dealer can set this for you or if you tuck the original wiring harness by the AC vent you can just remove the the trim and plug in the stock head unit, change the menus and remove it. I have only needed to change those settings once in the past year.
I'm stuck in Las Vegas for a few more days and I'll post more information when I get home.
