Diff Issues

Well, the grin factor has taken a bit of a dent after week two of D3 ownership Crying or Very sad

Found one of the rear speakers isn't working (no real drama) and having taken it into the dealer to have a look they say it needs a new one. 'Not sure the warranty covers electrics Sir' was the initial line but a reminder that we only just bought it from them and gently referring them to consumer protection legislation quickly elicited an 'I'm sure we can cover it one way or the other' type of reply. Very Happy Not a good start though.

The real issue is that having been on a longish journey the whine/drone when slowing on the engine that I mentioned in another post was quite noticeable so I asked them to have a look. Having had a listen they say it isn't right, sounds like the front diff and subject to further testing it may need to be replaced.

Now, having bought from a LR dealer I, perhaps naively, thought that any such issues should have been rectified prior to sale and having to get into discussions about the warranty possibly not covering it wasn't what I expected. Don't want to jump the gun with being too critical until I see what they actually do - maybe it will be fixed with no charge and all will be well. Question

Question is should I be concerned about the diff? With 55k on the clock it seems a bit early to be expecting such trouble. Any thoughts?

I had the same problems with mine when I bought it. After a few days I realised it had a droning from the front end and took it back. It did require a new front diff, and it was duly changed under the warranty.
I may be a sceptic, but when the dealer takes in a part exchange, that susequently is presented as Land Rover Approved Used, they do the following:=

Wash the D3 and clean the inside, does nothing else, not even a road test.

Along comes Joe Public, has a test drive and agrees to buy it.

Mr Joe Public drives away with his purchase after a couple of days.

The dealer salesman is happy.

Mr Joe Public grows concerned of the various noises that appear as he gets used to the D3.

Mr Joe Public take the D3 back to the dealer, who after going through the usual diatribe, agrees something is wrong.

Mr Joe Public returns a couple of days later, drive away in the now repaired D3.

Dealer is very happy, because he has passed on the cost of the repair to Land Rover Warranty department.

Dealer is happy, because it cost him nothing and Mr Joe Public thinks the dealer is a diamond geezer??

Old Sailor,
I must admit my thinking is in line with yours. I am not actually sure they took it for a run to listen and quickly agreed something was not right so my suspicion is they weren't exactly surprised to see me.

Has yours been okay apart from the diff being replaced?

When were you in the mob by the way? I was 79 to 86 but as a 'skimmer' I doubt our paths crossed, although I did do a spell at Dolphin.

Targa,

Yes mine has been fine since the new diff, no noise at all now.

I was in the mob from 1965 - 76, trained a Ganges as a chef. Sad Did 2.5 years on the Hermes (round the world trips back then).
Volunteered for submarines and realised cooking wasn't my thing!! Shocked Did a number of years at Dolphin as well as the submarine training. Great life, but only really missed it after I had been out for a few years. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Bit before my time then 8)

Hermes was still around when I was in, in fact my first ship was Bulwark. Never fancied subs so stayed up top. I enjoyed my time overall but was ready to leave when I did.

Targa, if searched at +diff + noise many posts come up. I am un the impression that earlier cars have problems with the front diff 35-55K miles. Later models start after 105K miles. To find these links it is helpfull to mention year/VIN [part blanked..] like " 2006 S manual VIN 34A345xxx' or such in your profile...

Cheers, Dan

Thanks Dan. Have to say that I haven't had a lot of luck using the search facility - sems to bring back a lot of stuff that isn't always relevant. Maybe it is operator error.. Wink

The diff has just been replaced under warranty and the noise has disappeared. Interestingly a noise was noted a couple of years ago according to the service records but nothing done. This would probably have been around the 30k mark as it now has 55k on the clock. Mine is a 55 car so in line with your thoughts. Doesn't seem many miles for getting these sort of problems though...???

Targa, 55k [miles] agrees with 'Lady Muck' and 'Old Sailor' data... Although these are '05 and '07 cars. So it's more related to mileage as to buildyear. Didn't yet have time to compare auto/manual etc. Searching is easier if one uses proper terms. Just 'noise' or 'rumble' brings shiploads of stuff. Using the helps '+diff +noise' gives the combination of all posts containing the words 'diff' ánd 'noise' in it.. Would like to have an idea of your VIN [part ; last 3 digits blanked OK].

I have exactly this prob on my dec 05 D3.........whines and judders slightly when you take you foot off the accelerator.....most noticeably at motorway speeds.
Dealer gave me a 3 month after-market warranty with the car, which is still valid.Think it is worth a try and if not,can anyone tell me roughly the cost of new diffs please ?

Shocked ouch......just phoned my guy and he says he wouldn't wipe his a*se with an after market warranty as they exclude pretty much anything that could possibly go wrong with a car......basically the diff would have to explode before a warranty would even consider it.
Please God a diff oil change cures it ...... Big Cry

Nithing like sweeping generalisations! Depends on the warranty and warranty company. Some are good, some are not. Rolling Eyes

I had the dreaded grumbling on mine and did the diff oil change. The front is easy specially if you have the NSF wheel off as you can get to the filler easy from the wheel arch. Didnt cure the problem but after a little more diagnostics I noted the NSF wheel bearing had some play. Replaced that and all is well

euangibson have a mooch in the Ins & Fin section, lots of experience in there on what companies are or are not actually covering. Presently with Warranty Direct and pretty happy with them. Going through turbo change with them so keeping fingers crossed. Thumbs Up
