Hello there,
Had an interesting grinding noise from the front of my Disco3 the other day. I stopped to have a look and found that the brake pads looked pretty low. Popped into a garage to find that 2 had worn down to the metal and ruined the discs. Booked it in for the next day.
I drove away (very tentatively) and after about 10 miles the brake pad warning lights came on. A tad late.....
Is this a 'feature' that anyone else has experienced?!

mmm bad news. Did they charge you for the disks ?? I would expect that as the warning light failed that you would be covered by your warranty ??
Is yours a manual or auto ??
So far at 51K miles on the same set she came with, maybe my brake pad warning light / system is suspect  Mind you most of my miles are motorway.

Hi Simon,
I'm only at 21k miles so I need to chat to the main dealer... I kept the discs and pads to show them. Had the work done at Jake Wright, a specialist as he was nearby...
I'm seeing LR on the 28th

good luck... and 21K seems low but if your in an auto maybe thats normal and especially if your town / city bound most of the time.

21k is OK. My warning worked, and I got 1000 miles on the rears with the warning before it went in. They were not quite on the metal. Mine is now on its 3rd set of both front and rear pads at 61k

Can you let me know what was the thickness of the break pad when you changed it. I recon I still have around 3mm on the front on an auto car with 25k (miles) in them, am I close to change them?

Hi, the garage tells me they were on 1mm.
I would have done them myself, but I had no time, and I did not realise they were worn until the warning appeared. As it was in for a service 1 week later I let them do the work.
Normally I would change pads at 2 -3 mm. The warning I would expect to come on at 1mm.
There is however a big issue here. The D3 only has warning sensors on the front left and rear right wheels. Why it is not on all wheels god only knows! another cost saver I suppose. If your pads do not wear evenly, (maybe lots of braking on corners or rondabouts) then you could have an unsensed pad wear out before the warning comes on.
So, nothing beats good old weekly visual check of all wheels Never trust the warning , I was lucky.

Yes - almost identical & wrecked the rear discs. However, as there is meant to be a brake wear warning indicator, (and the manual gives no warning that it does not work ), I raised this with the LR Customer Relationship Centre on the basis that there is therefore a design/manufacturing fault in the vehicle, and they agreed and authorised the payment for the discs (the pads obviously being wear items & as such paid by me)
I would recommend calling LR and just do not accept "No" from them, as it was their choice to instal a feature that they could point to in their marketing literature but then try to economise on a premium priced vehicle by missing out half the sensors for the feature!!
