"Check Brake Pads" message...
Hello...
I just started to get the 'Check Brake Pads' message and the extremely annoying warning bongs...
It has just tripped over 37000 miles - so I don't think I should complain too much..!
I have no mechanical knowledge whatsoever so I have booked it into the dealers... Any ideas how much I am looking at for pads/fitting and should I expect to change the discs as well..?
Fitting is probably about an hours labour I'd suspect, more if the disks need doing tooThe End

Pads and Sensors will need to be replaced. Don’t know the costs, best you ring around your local dealers. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The sensors will need replacing if they are damaged, this will depend on how long the car has been driven with the "warning signs" going off.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

All sorted today...
Hello & thanks for all of the help/advice you have all given...
Got it sorted today... It needed new pads & sensors on all corners...
Total came to £320.00 Inc fitting/VAT... Worth every penny to stop that blasted bonging...
When the message first appeared I called my dealer and was told I could go on for another 500 miles before I would have any problems...
I only did 50 miles and apparently I came close to scoring the discs... I am so glad I could get it booked in quickly...
Cheers

Hmmm.
My dealer had my car for enhancement, and told me the pads were near end of life, but don't worry, they'll go about 3000 miles after the "check pads" warning / chimes.
3000 miles of that chiming
Anyway, one week later, the first warning. Couldn't stand the chimes, changed them next day. Easy DIY job (once you work out how to jack the car) .. See Gareths tip.
All my pads were evenly worn, with about 3mm left, having done 41k.Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Brake pad warning sensors
I replaced all the brake pads about 100 miles after the first warning. Total cost £90 plus VAT and about an hour's work. Now the amber "brake pad" warning is on all the time! The sensors do not look damaged. Any idea how these sensors work?
The rear offside sensor would be easy to replace as the plug and socket can easily be reached, but the front nearside sensor wire disappears into the mudguard and I can't find the plug and socket under the bonnet.
Any ideas please?

The sensor must be grounded somewhere. It is best to replace the wire as it costs peanuts. The front one is on the left wheel, and the plug is behind the wheel arch liner and is a complete tw*t to get at.
I removed all the scrivets from the rear of the liner and dropped the rear half of the wheel arch liner to access the plug.
Might be worth you also buying a handful of new scrivets cos' you are bound to break some in the process

When I changed mine I asked the service manager for tips on changing the lead, and he did also mention that occasionaly the (ABS?) warning light will stay on and need re-setting by dealer testbook (or whatever it's currently called)Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Brake Pad Warning
Many thanks. Changed both sensors and all OK - no need to get anything reset. Clever to put that connector behind the wheel arch.
Being inquisitive, I took apart the old sensor. It has two wires which connect together with a thin piece of copper wire inside the plastic bit that slots into the pad. Brake wear caused the disc to wear away the copper wire and create an open circuit. So it seems that once the warning lamp has illuminated, at least one sensor must be changed.
