Transmission "Knock" at Slow Speed
I have been a member for a few days - great site. Finding out that I was not just an old worry guts, there were problems, and still are. How about this one - when driving slowly in a queue of traffic, it is really hard to get the drive to take up smoothly - tend to get a "knock". Last time I had this was in my 10 year old Vauxhall Viva, back in '83. Dealer dismissed it.

If you do have an auto then as the motor slows (say <10mph) the torque convertor releases .....and then as you begin to accelerate it re-engages ....sometimes this process can give a clunk or knock. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it .....though I guess that some may experience more of a clunk than others ...ands especially if you have noticed it you will tend to be listening all the time 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

'Hovering' is worse....thats what George Michael does in the toilets isn't it 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
'ere ya go.... This actually refers to the V8 but AFAIK it's the same gearbox so could/should be applicable to the TDV6 too Probably at least worth talking to your dealer about it
Technical Service Bulletin No. LA307-003
Subject/Concern: Discovery 3/LR3 - Harsh 2 to 1 Transmission Downshift
Summary:
A customer may report a concern that when the throttle is re-applied following deceleration in traffic and the vehicle is almost coming to a stop, the gearshift is harsh and results in a thump or bump when the transmission shifts from second to first gear. The problem can be intermittent and can vary depending upon the amount of throttle that is re-applied.
Cause: An automatic transmission software calibration issue is the cause of the above complaint.
Action: Should a customer express concern regarding the above, refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to update the control module software.
I'll see if there's anything else relevant...The End

Thank you for your thoughts. Yes, I have the auto and sorry I did not show my profile info (how do I get that onto my postings?) The change down to first makes sense now - at slow speeds I am probably in second gear, as I apply load to move a bit faster, if shifts down, hence the knock. I had the last sw upgrade last July, but no noticeable difference. Will keep an eye on it and mention the known problem when it goes back to dealer.
If M25 gets any slower, it wont be a problem anyway!
and posting my car details......? (going in search of online help - unless someone gets to me first)
