Navigation System

Anyone know anything about the Navigation System. In particular, it seems like it should be very easy to have TOPO for the offroad maps. In order to accomplish that, a free or commercial source for topo data would be needed, and it is available.

As far as the offroad display mode, non map display, with compass on the right portion. Don't you think for avid offroads and left right tilt sensor/display would be a really nice option.

clarification

Ok, I am sorry, the message is a little confusion, and I don't speak the Queens English. Let me explain again. Keep the votes coming, as it will give us some strength with LR.

1. I want LR to develop a tilt sensor screen and a speed display on the unit.

2. I want to contact LR with some ammunition that says either an overwhelming number of users want this, or

3. I want developer or programmer information for the Navigation System so I can work on writing one.

Here is an example of FREE topo data available online, for example. This data is getting better and better everyday. http://www.topozone.com/

Don't hold your breath waiting for LR to do this - I doubt very much that they would develop anything on request unless it was critical or key to selling product.

Even then it would only appear in the D4 or later.

Yes, I agree, however, their nav system is already award winning, and I would think that keeping it award winning may be a priority...

On the subject of topo (or topographic) data - only the US has it freely available at a decent resolution (30m) - the RoW has to make do with 90m (even though 30m worldwide was captured by the Shuttle some years ago)

tlt, you could digitise Aeronautical Charts (OK enough for flying over the countryside) and use a setup like Gurvan's to have a moving map.

However, be careful not to think the long flat straight and wide roads are worth using because you will have to share with others and they don't have a horn to warn you of their impending presence!

charts

yes agreed. There are many global mapping projects, and I believe the data can be assembled. The real trick here, is getting some co-operation from LR and their supplier for development specs to interface with the system.

There is in fact map data availabe from commercial as well as free sites globally, it just takes a little research. Here is an example for the UK, EU, and virtually all countries..

Large list of open source mapping projects http://opensourcegis.org/

all that being said, somebody know somebody that knows somebody?

Todd, I believe it is Denso that LR got to develop the navigation system.

Maybe a back door approach to their technical section could be a start.

Naturally, developers of such systems would be loath to allow you to have access to commercially sensitive code but I am sure that someone could reverse engineer (did I really say that?) and give you something along the lines you need.

Herman, see my reply to tlt about digitising Aeronautical Charts (ICAO charts). Copied below.
