Is there a way to lock the car while the engine is running? |
|
As the title says - is there a way to lock the car while the engine is running?
I would like to be able to leave the car running as it warms up and not worry about someone jumping in a whipping it off the driveway.

I think the Highways Agency D3's can be secured with a running engine. I'm not sure if its available to the public though

can you not lock it with the spare set of keys. Ive not tried it myself though...
Edit, just spotted it for the D4.
answer : No
I have tried it on the D4 and the car just beeps. But if someone does nick it, they wont get far as I beleive the car cuts out if the keys arent present. Assuming you have keyless entry and start. Duncan

Yes - for a D4 - although I have an XS so have keyless go but not keyless entry.
You're right that if you start the car and get out with the key and try and lock it with the fob, the car just beeps.

I test drove a G4 the other week that had an after Market Clifford alarm fitted which cost around 3k and that had a remote start so you could have the engine running. My first question would be why do you want to? If it is to heat the engine then the FBH is the way to go, just get a timer for that and you're sorted. You can then add a remote to that or a gsm module so you can activate it remotely. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Stu - that is exactly what I want to do ie. start the ngine so the car warms up.
The FBH route is one route although it costs money to activate / for kit whereas locking the door is usually free

In the D3 you can do it but wouldn't recommend it at all !!
1) Start the car!
2) Shut all doors apart from passenger door
3) Reach in and press 'lock button' on dash
4) Shut passenger door
There you go a locked D3 with engine running.
Warning : The other remote will not open the doors so you have to manually insert the key into passenger door handle. SOLD - 23my Range Rover Sport D300 Dynamic SE

It would be possible by shutting the door with the window open, reaching in and locking the doors then flicking the window shut. However if left on a public road you could receive a £30 fixed penalty notice for leaving the vehicle unattanded with the engine running.
Highways and police get around this by having 'run lock' which basically means pressing a button after stopping with the engine running, then removing the key. The engine then stays running but will cut out if the clutch is depressed or hand brake released (depending on vehicle) without the key reinserted.

Highways Agency use RunLock, enables the D3 to run as normal with the keys removed, the engine cuts out if and when somebody enters and touches a Pedal.....
