Discovery 3 Sat Nav problem |
|
I am new to this forum so appologies if this is a known fault and has been already discussed.
The digital compass on my sat nav is "sticking" so when I am driving the moving map display is not orientated correctly. I have tried toggling between the fixed North compass and the dynamic one, as well as "rotating" the vehicle in the calibration mode but it still returns to the needle in a fixed postion, normally, but not always, with North to the left of the vehicle. I have also tried removing the fuse for an hour or so. The vehicle is recieving a GPS signal OK.
Guy Salmon in Stockport suggested I buy the updated road map disc and reboot the system with this in which I have done with no success. They now are now telling me the only solution is to have the entire system replaced for just £1400
Does anybody out there have any suggestions please? Thank you in anticipation.
Nick

Does your navigation show you in the right position? Because I thought the compass uses GPS info. so if you gps doesn't work correct you would get bad info for the compass too.
The other thing what it could be is the gyro's in the D3. If you loose gps reception the nav system uses the gyro and speed info to calculate were you are.
You can see gps and gyro information under the secret button on the nav screen.
Do a search and you find more info. Roel

A compass that relies solely on GPS will presumably only work when you're in motion (ie it could derive "north" from the mapping data and your changing position, so it may come to "rest" pointing anywhere random, or wherever the software engineers programmed it to (which would be "last place North was")...?
I've just been out to try mine, it reliably pointed north when I turned the system on (car been parked asleep for hours). It remained accurate whilst I made a tight turn on my drive (which isn't on the SatNav map) so it can't be solely GPS. ____

The nav system will reconise you movement on your drive without using the map.
The next thing to try is move your D3 around without keys in the car so your D3 is asleep and then see what the nav does after you moved it around. If it has a compass bould in the map will be right directely, if it is based only on the gps it will only move the right direction after you drove a little.
I don't know what the gyro will do in this situation. Roel

Thanks for the speedy replies guys - much appreciated.
The postion of the car appears to be spot on and moves "correctly" as I drive around so I can only assume the signal is being recieved and displayed. However I thought the compass was gps driven also. The problem is whenever I drive anywhere the compass doesn't move so consequently the map doesn't rotate any more either. Which means the roads on the left are sometimes shown on the right and...well I'm sure you get the picture.
I can only assume that it is a gyro problem but have no idea how to confirm that or fix it!

There are places to get to the 2 different screens;
I found this in Wiggs gallery.
http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=1282
Adrian is a nice guy so I don't think he minds me showing this.
Here is a link with how you get to the secet screens, and offcourse Wiggs comes with the pictures.

Coming back to the problem, If you have the black screen with the Gyro info
The relative bearing is 0 deg when you start the D3 when you start driving that angle change the same as your direction is changing. Is you gyro giving you that too? Roel

Tried to get to the "secret screen" but somehow couldn't find it....
However, I had the vehicle parked on a slope today, sloping from side to side, and when I drove away the sat nav started working again! A bit sluggish at first but the compass had freed up and was soon back to how it should be. All very strange.

New battery - All is now OK!! |
|
Afetr many months of "living" with the annoying Sat Nav problem I needed to replace the vehicles battery. I had one or two issues with it starting first time over the winter but it finally gave up the ghost a day or so ago. So now not only does it start first time, every time, the sat Nav is working fine!
It appears that the system needs 12volts, or very close to that, otherwise it does silly things. So my top tip of the day is before you spend a fortune on replacing/updating your sat Nav, just check the condition of your car battery. DOH....

I am hoping someone can help with this.........
The GPS antenna on my Sat/Nav is not working, it shows up on the screen as not working. Everything else works fine....4x4 info, settings.
Where is the GPS antenna located ? Is it in the fin on top of the roof or is it in the high mounted brakelight or somewhere else ? How do I get access to it ?
If the wire from the back of the Disc Drive to the antenna is cut, is there a LR replacement wire? If so, what is the part #
Thanks for any help

My SATNAV does something similar ... It shows no GPS signal where we live or where I work, but seems to be okay on high ground 45miles away. Even without a signal, it's pretty good at locating me, but every so often, it will throw a double six and have me miles away, travelling in the wrong direction almost as if it has missed a couple of direction changes or properly lost its orientation.
I wondered whether there were insufficient GPS satellites visible to properly 'fix' the car (I think it needs contact from 3) - hence the no GPS symbol, but perhaps just enough to maintain a decent running fix most of the time. I suspect that's a false hope! My other thought is that the antenna is on its way out, and failing to receive the signals. I plan to take a look in the shark fin at the weekend to see if the antenna connections are all okay. More to follow ...

Intermittent GPS reception fixed! |
|
Thanks to the directions here, I set my display to the navigation diagnostics screen so I could see satellite signals being received. At the time, I could see satellites above the horizon but they were showing 'T' and I had no GPS on the map screen (small black box labelled GPS with a red line through it).
From the back of the car I took the headlining down - again thanks to the directions here - to check the connections. There was only one wire going to the fin, so I now know my GPS antenna (06 plate) is in the high level brake light. I then noticed the a thin coaxial cable leading into that loom was pinched under the port side plastic pillar cap. I lifted the cable out and, hey presto all my 'T' satellite fixes turned to 'P's and normal GPS service resumed.
Thanks for the tips here. Thankfully a very easy fix! I haven't plucked up the courage yet to try the Range Rover display fix ...
