General Grabber AT2- Discontinued?
Here's a question that I expect Andy or Ken will know the answer to.
This weekend, I spoke to a chap I know who has a demolition business, he runs various 4X4's. I noticed that his Jap double cab pick up had new looking GG AT2's fitted. Got speaking about tyres and he'd not heard about the new GG AT, but asked me if GG were continuing to produce the AT2. I said I thought that the new AT would be the AT2 replacement, but wasn't 100% sure.
So does anyone know if production of the AT2 has stopped or will be stopping?

As yet only the 255/65x17 and 265/70x15 AT2's have been deleated.
Very differcult to know when the other sizes will be phased out, some AT2 sizes will carry on alongside the new AT.
No problem as you can mix the AT2 with the New AT.

Thanks Andy.
So in summary, two sizes have already been stopped, others to follow, but some sizes will continue alongside the new AT.

For a while, don't know for how long though.
I think ditching the AT2 in some of the sizes is a mistake, but I have no say in this as I am only a tyre fitter.

One big advantage on the AT2, I'm running 255/60x18, is the possibility to put studs in it! Since this is not the case for the new AT, I hope the AT2 will be along for a long time, preferable until a proper replacement is available.
My other option would be Cooper Discoverer M+S to which there is also a possibility to fit studs. And then there is a bunch of nordic winter tyres but thes tend to have a less "AT" look and feel Sure these are great on icy roads but of course you want to have the right look as well. 8)
This applies to us in the nordic countries where studs is allowed of course.
Some pics, and yes, we have snow in Stockholm already
AT2 in snow, Stockholm Sweden, november 2010.
Maximum allowed stud protrusion is 1.2 mm new and 2.0 mm when used!
Studded AT2's. 5 new waiting in garage, and one additional spare already used two seasons.

I think ditching the AT2 in ALL sizes is a great idea from my experience of them... Pirelli ATR's are the tyre of choice for road, AT and winter use

Having used Pirelli ATR's on an off road & during last winter in the snow and ice, I can't fault them (as I've said before on numerous posts).
TFC, it would be good to hear your reasons why you don't rate GG AT2's. Feedback from actual users of tyres etc. is what makes this forum so useful.
I lost count of the number of punctures I had with my AT2s, on and off road. Flint picked up from the verges would be through the shoulder and lead to a written-off tyre before I even registered the noise of the stone in the treads.
Found them to be sketchy in the wet compared to Scorpion Zeros, they robbed 2-3mpg too.
ATRs have been bloomin' great in comparison and I would expect the new Grabber AT to be an improvement on the AT2 as well.
On the plus side, AT2s were the only half sensible alternative for an AT tyre for a very long time and were (are?) sensibly priced.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I still back this AT2 100%, as I have said in the past I use them on all my 4x4's with NO problems whatsoever.
I also think it's a shame that these are being phased out as we have many, many very happy users.
I have covered well over 200,000 miles on a selection of 4x4's with NO sidewall problems.
Remember not all of us off-road as much as some on here.
And as I have also stated we see equal wall damage on all makes, I am not going to slag any brands but thats a fact.
I am in the postion to choose whatever I want to drive on and at present my choice is 100% the General AT2.
It's by far the most popular tyre we sell.
We will just have to wait and see how well over time the NEW General AT works out for end users.
