What kind of Chipping ?

Hi,

because here in north we don't have the original Turbochip product available, I have been considering the available options. There is a pro company that could install two different chip versions:
1) mild one that gives 209 HP and 506 Nm
2) power one that provides 231 HP and 510 Nm
vendor is some German company.

My question is that which one to go or should I proceed at all ?
Is LR manual gearbox and cardans strong enough to hold 231 HP ? and it torgue like 510 NM too much ?
Is there a way to get orinal Turbochip, any dealer in Skandinavia ?

Problems

Hi,

the latest German Autobild manazine came on Friday. It has an article about the damages that chips may cause to the engine:

- increased turbopressure is made by increasing RPM's of the turbo charger. Depending of the charger, it might not cope the increased RPM's and heat

- diesel particle filter of the exhaust pipe get burned when too much dielsel fuel get injected. Result is a lot of smoke, broken filter and impossible to pass annual gas tests before fixing it

- engine block might suffer and get broken due increased temperatures

see more in www.autobild.de.

My conclusion is to not to get any chip or such mods installed. The standard 190 HP must be sufficient. If not, I'm looking for the M5 with 400+ HP Very Happy

Well all the cars that I have had "chipped" are still around & with no engine problems. Oldest being a K reg 1992. It is massively important to have it done properly though & I've always researched thoroughly.
I've witnessed badly re-mapped cars, which have been horrible to drive & would have eventually caused damage I'm sure.

The quality and safety of different upgrades can be difficult to ascertain. What I can tell you about the JE tune is that we do extensive testing in Germany on the unlimited autobahn and we actually fit temperature sensors to various parts of the engine, particularly the exhaust manifolds, to try to judge how far we can push tunes safely. The maximum power of our tune for TDV6 is lower than that advertised by some others, but we are confident we will not break anyone's turbo or damage their engine. The standard LR set up is conservatively rated, even if you tow heavy trailers in a very hot climate, but it also allows for poor maintenance and poor fuel. Any tune up is using up some of this margin, but good maintenance, good fuel and sensible use of the vehicle will allow a considerable tune increase.
