Blocked Drains and Damaged Electrics |
|
So yesterday was abit of a of a day , As posted coulded get in car no response from any of my key fobs nor would manual use of key open any doors ,, anyway after some very much appreciated help from this site did eventually get in . After a few suggested solutions car had to go to stealers as i couldnt lock the car , eventually got a call from them today
saying thats it is corroded wires to the central locking system caused by water coming in near the passenger footwell because of a blocked drain Surely if the drain is blocked the water shouldnt then come into the car and damage electrics and i would of thought drained off elsewhere especially an off road vechicle, is this a bad design or am i missing something ?? Stealer wants 2-3 hours labour to clear drains .So my questions are!!! Is it much of a job to clear theese drains?? and should the water be diverting into the footwell of my car which i have found wet on several occasions and also doing damage to electrics !! .

unfortunately this seems to be a common problem. If you run a search you will come across quite a few posts as well as a couple of good pointers as to how to check and clear the drains. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

You're lucky, My Main Fuse Box shorted out completely a year or so ago for exactly the same thing. My Drain tubes leaked directly onto the passenger footwell and fuse box are, leading to corrosion that ultimately shorted out Big style
Now I clear my drain tubes out EACH season with curtain wire, exactly the correct diameter as the tubes, and 2.1mtr will be enough to rod the through right to the end of the valves.
To remedy permanently, you need to cut of / open the valves behind the wing vent, and the passenger side behind arch trim.

Landrovers have ALWAYS had leaky sunroofs, my TD5 and 300 series both suffered
In front of the sunroof tray there is 2 holes that are access either side on the inner side of the tray on the front edge. Difficult to spot but trust me they are there.

Net curtain wire, thats the stuff.
Now imagine you are standing in the D3 and out of the sunroof. where the track is on the front edge in the corners is a hole either side, the diameter of the wire and hard to see, but its there
But it is advisable, the other end of the drain tubes is a valve, its a rubber cross valve that allows water to trickle out. But my findings is after prolonged dry weather and heat these valves stick shut and block the tubes. Everybody thats had this problem has cut the valves open.
To find the valve on the drivers side, remove the air intake grill, the sponge packing that will be soaked, and you will see the end of the tube and valve, cut it open.....Passenger side is in an identical position, but to get ot it you need to remove the arch liner and there is no vent that side.
Hope that helps

I had a shower in my D3 the other evening when the water came through the light fitting.
Following the instructions on the thread already mentioned it's not that big a job.
I got behind the wheel arch liner on the passenger side and the air intake on the drivers side to clean out and cut the end off the rubber 'valves'. Plus cleaned out both drain tubes with MacLeods curtain wire trick all in the space of @1.5hrs.
But that included a cup of tea, and I only undid the wheel arch liner enough to get my arm up there and carry out the operation blind. I still have the scratches to prove it so watch out for the bracket sticking out that takes one of the plastic liner retaining clip things.
Nasher. Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

It's strange that no one mentions the rear sunroof drain tubes! These run above the rear doors and down the c post. They can also get blocked up and I found mine had a kink in it that stopped anything passing through, but I guess it all depends on if you park the car on an incline!
Had the roof lining out on mine and lots of pics in my gallery.
