Removable tow bar - now not removable... |
|
Hi
Need some help please. I've had my removable tow bar attached constantly for about 2 years now and am trying to take it off as I'll be away next week abroad and didn't want it on.
I can only get the key into the lock about half way and is the same no matter which way I put the key in. It's as if there is something stuck in the lock that is preventing the key going in.
I'm thinking it could be either:
1) some one has tried to nick and up the lock or
2) it's just corroded.
I believe there are some lock kits that can be bought to replace the lock but how do I get the lock out that is already there.
Can anyone help??

Buy yourself a new lock - and it will be obvious
(you'll need proof of ownership for the dealer) Never get mad - get even !!

The most likely cause is lack of lubrication. Give the lock mechanism a good squirt with WD40 or similar, leave it for 30 to 60 mins and see how you go.

Thanks for the replies.
Should have said that have had it soaking for about a week now in WD40, but still it won't go in!!
Just spoke with TLO - all sorted now and should be easy to fit according to him!!!! Can't believe how cheap these locks are and how 'easy' they are to remove the lock. Will make sure I remove this when not being used from now on...
cheers,
James

just buy a new lock from the dealers you dont need proof of id
you may have to drill the lock out if you cant work out how to get the old lock out or it wont play ball.
lock it only made from soft metal so easy to drill out.
new lock costs about £10 Duncan

BD2,
Just done this on mine today after reading the instructions someone had posted on ebay!!! I paid £9 for a new lock from my local main dealer after dropping out of bidding at £11 on ebay !!. I have now taken my towbar off as the Tintent won't be out for 6 months!
Beware if you do bid on ebay for a lock, there are two different sizes, my dealer laid both out on the counter and I could pick the correct one.

No you dont
Oh yes you do!
Just got back from my local stealers and there is a big notice behind the parts counter saying LR policy is that replacement keys can only be ordered with full ID - photo and address ID. Not every dealer may enforce/know this but mine does. Tony

I have purchased at least 5 locks ..and never had to show id ....and from different dealers
Perhaps they have changed there policy ...but a tow bar can be off any car ..so i cant see the point
Understandable for normal ignition keys G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Mine was on for 3 years - repeated soaking with WD40 and 3 in 1 over 2-3 days did the trick

Once you succeed in removing it, recommend you don't leave it on, as there are people (charitable description) who go round thieving them. That happened to me and after I bought it back on ebay, now always leave it off.
