Crazy amount of smoke from FBH using Webasco timer |
|
Hi
tried searching this problem but struggled.
This morning during the Webasco timer warm up cycle, two people knocked my door to tell me my car was on fire. "Yes the smoke is normal, but thankyou for stopping and telling me" After two years I still get this. No probs.
Trouble was, the second guy was right - the amount of smoke was nothing like usual, it was like a special effect, loads and loads of smoke, an embarassing and worrying cloud.
Any thoughts are most welcome.

You can initiate this with a Faultmate if you set it to Prime.
Check out Wiggs' vid.
But haven't heard of it doing it just through the timer.
Had my replacement FBH, timer & GSM remote installed yesterday by Pete [BAS]

Hi gents
I'd forgotten all about my FBH smoke machine till yesterday when my wife relayed the tale and laffed how the car used to belch smoke.
She doesn't yet realise the fault is still there waiting to kick me in the cods the first cold morning....
Can I flag this fault up again. Its certainly rare - nothing on the RR site either

Talking of smoke from the FBH puzzles me a bit.
When mine starts, using the timer, you can just detect some smoke then it vanishes but nothing that others seem to have. The FBH has done approx 90 hours of running from its internal log.

Im interested here too as ive just fitted the timer and GSM remote to mine and had a few observations / questions...
1) When turned on i get a bit of smoke but thats it, seems to work other than that though as hot air comes out the exhaust.
2) I fitted the LED and unlocking the doors/opening them seems to turn the heater off. Is this normal or should it continue whether the doors are opened and engine started etc...
Thanks 2011 Discovery 4 HSE

Dan,
If you wake the car up it will shut down the heater. This can be unlocking the door, key in ignition etc.
So what you have is normal.

The 'smoke' is pefectly normal and relative to the air temp, condensation and burn mix. The unit will switch off when the doors are activated 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Found this on the 'other side'

The fuel pump for these heaters has two speeds, Start and Run, sounds like yours is running too long at start rate or not ever dropping to the run rate, hence lots of smoke from the unburnt diesel and/or diesel running from the exhaust.... back to the dealer!

The video from Wiggs shows how much smoke I get EVERY time the FBH kicks in under normal driving conditions.
Apart from the embarrassment factor - surely this can be neither "normal" or any good for mpg?
