I think Ford would have big difficulties now to extract Jaguar from the PAG setup, as Jag are so closely linked with Land Rover (and Aston)..

Ford build everything for Jaguar anyway - to drop the brand wouldn't mean losing the engines etc. Disco 5 HSE Lux

I think the comment about partnerships is probably the way to go - that's probably the only way to hold and afford to support a diverse vehicle portfolio that can adapt to market changes (US fuel prices etc.).
Ford suffer form having a lot of eggs in one basket, particulalry in the US, where I think one of the articles said SUV, which make up most of its sales, had declined.
Oil prices should start to fall soon, which should revive the US marekt a tad, but the warning shot has been fired. D3 HSE V8...

We live in hope, just bought 1800 ltrs of heating oil, double the price of Jan 03. Really pi**es me off when people whine on about the price of gas going up, oh to have the luxury of cheap gas!
Rant over!

The real culprit is that Toyota just beat Ford for the first time in total sales last Quarter. Ford is no longer #2 in the US. The Wall Street Journal suggested it's due to Toyota's efforts on Fuel economy, thanks in no small part to it's marketing bombardment that says they are fuel efficent. My friends Tundra double cab gets the same gpm as my LR3, so I'm a bit skeptical of the truth of these ads.
For something like 14 years in a row, the Ford F-150 full size light duty pickup has been the #1 selling vehicle in the USA. I think that slipped this year. I see a crapload of Toyota Tacoma's these days, and they are all V6's.

Doh! just read the links posted above. They basic confirm everything I said, more or less. I think the scary thing is that Ford put an investment banker in charge of Jaguar's fate.
Don't the MFR's learn? Don't the history lessons of Lee Iaccoa and Robert Lutz teach us anything? If you want to revive a car brand, put a Car Guy in charge of it! Freaking morons. Ford deserves to tank Jaguar if they are gonna be that stupid.
