Steering colum lower universal joint failure.

Hi,

I had to have the lower steering colum changed as the universal joint at the bottom was on it's way out.

I believe this is a common problem, but would like to confirm this.

Please let me know in this thread if you have had them changed.

My 07 model had done around 55 K Km when symptoms showed up.

Thanks

Glen

Around 10° of free-play (i.e. the steering wheel turns freely without moving the wheels) and clunking from the steering wheel when moving it from the center or changing direction. Once the play is taken up, the steering feel is normal again until you move the wheel in the other direction.

At least that's what happened on mine Thumbs Up

Mine was heavy and light steering as sort off klunking feel while turning.

This got sorted a month ago, in Norway we have a law that gives us a 5 year period to get things fixed, ie if it has an expected life of over 2 years then it have 5 year warranty.

The stealer is "trying it on" saying its not a common problem and wanted over £400 to fix it.

He also stated its a wear part not covered under the 5 year rule.

Now brakes and ball joints tyres etc I can accept as a wear part, but a steering UJ that should last longer.

I never warranted the repairs, they called me today asking for payment, told them in no certain words what I thought. They then called back offering the repairs for half price as I never agreed to repairs. Told him I don't think so and will take the matter up with Land Rover directly. Parts cost £55 in the UK and they quoted £190 for parts.

2 hours go by and they call back saying they will take the claim to Land Rover, and I will not hear more unless they do not get this repair covered.

Last time I take the vehicle to that dealership. Twisted Evil

They have also lost a new vehicle sale as I bought the wife's car another place.

Had mine replaced last week under the extended warranty, it's a RRS but I guess it's the same steering column. Car's only covered 42k miles, but it had been knocking since 25k, I just hadn't got round to having it looked at.

Symptoms were it had about 10mm of free play about the dead centre before the wheels actually did anything and on rough roads it used to 'knock' through the steering column. Pressure against the steering wheel stopped the knock.
