Aircon, can't get rid of the smell

Developed a nasty smell from the aircon this week, So to save the hassel of booking the car in to the dealer I went to my local dealer yesterday who sold me for £24.50 a can of aircon cleaner which I used last night. This morning the car smelt as bad as ever when the aircon was switched on. So off I went to another dealer near my office and bought a new charcoal pollen filter for £35, and for good measure on the way back I bought an Autoglym aircon cleaner for £11.95. Fitted the new filter and used the Autoglym treatment at lunchtime, but the aircon is still smelling, Thought this would be a simple problem to fix but having now spent £71.50 in total and still have the problem any thoughts what else could be the cause.

Is it a musty damp type of smell ?

Remove the pollen filter and see if it's still evident ? - if it is, renew the filter

I use Comma air con cleaner/conditioner, £11 from all good motor factors, often known as a A/C 'bomb' - works brilliant every time Thumbs Up

It's caused by bacteria on the condensor. With the AC on, turn the heater to maximum and the fan on to a low/medium setting. Stick with it for as long as you can. This should burn off the bacteria, at least for a while.

To get rid of it properly, google Chilly Willy's and give them a call if you're near the South coast. They'll put some atomised stuff onto is by blowing it around the condensor. It's a strong anti bacterial agent. This service, including a regas and lube is about £130.

Leaving the ac on all the time should help prevent it coming back.

A local valeter who has an aromatek unit and who uses bio-brisk should be able to sort you out. This...if used properly....will kill off the bacteria that may be breeding in your aircon system.

Cheers guys, must admit it don't pong anywhere near as bad today, I followed pagoda's advice and drove to work this morning with the heater wacked right up which seems to have helped, it also had the added benifit of me loosing 4Kg's due to the heat.

JKP, thanks for that advice, if it comes back i'll find someone with a aromatek unit
