Starting to think of economics of swapping 54 D3 for D4
While my 70K 29/11/2004 manual D3, waxoyled, blanked EGR, is in for brake booster and rotary coupler recalls this morning, rang round to get price for next service and belt change - aarrrrhhh!. Even well respected indy in coventry said 8 hours @ £85 + VAT + £150ish parts. - with £300 cost of regular small service = £1300. Also will need a front lower control arm and rear bush some time in next 12 months. Other issue is clutch is fine at the moment, but if needed clutch/flywheel, that's another £12-1500.
Question 1, if goes in for belt change service this October coming, is it a good bit of preventative maintenance to do clutch/flywheel at same time,as an engine out job? Of course, with my luck, do that and garage will tell me - "clutch was fine - didn't really need to chage at all!"
More fundamental question is , if could privately get £10Kish for mine (couple v. minor dents and scratches, touched up), and get 12 month old GS with right extras or XS for £30Kish, maybe a bit more, I'd have 2yrs warranty (although have to pay more VED) - I'm beginning to think could be sensible option (notwithstanding my reservation of 19"wheels and low profile tyres)
Any thoughts?

Don't do the clutch unless you have problems. Doing the cambelts is not an engine out job. The rear belt is the most difficult, but can be done in situ.
time to change up , financially it's better in the long run , having big car bills is a right pain , is it throwing good money after bad !2008 ,hse, it does what it says .

Depreciation on a new car will pay for quite a few repairs. You will also have to pay about £300 extra for your first tax disc.

Of course the depreciation has slowed right down on mine so it won't be worth much less in 2/3 yrs time unless something really big needs doing (aka clutch/flywheel!), certainly lot less than new car depreciates. D4 also costs more on tyres as well as VED
Also, amazed that Trinity Motors, Hinckley who have just done my brake recall, quoted £747 for the 105K service/belt changer £550 less than indie (reason - 5 hrs rather than 8!)
Another also, are D4s selling for more used than they were new! - just seen a couple of HSEs for over £51K. That would be the price for a fully loaded new car. On Buyacar, I can get new 3.0 GS with leather, htd front seats, roof rails, powerfold mirrors, full size spare, metallic and towpack for £38K
Sounds like you are in d4 mode , ved is more yes , but no bills other than servicing , warr etc , if you can do it I certainly would d4 d4 d4 d4 Sounds like the daleks 2008 ,hse, it does what it says .

Just changed my 56 plate RRS HSE for a 10 plate D4 XS. Have to say it is a heart and head job !!! My big mistake was swapping my D3 for a RRS in the first place but hey will put it down to experience, not that that the RRS was unreliable just wasn't for me. So the D4 has put the Disco in RR territory for refinement. All in all better screwed together and seems to be 15% better on fuel.
They are holding there money well and as said earlier are fetching nearly new money second hand but that is good for residuals on both the D4 and D3. I would say your looking at early 30's for a GS and early 40's for an XS. Shukers ludlow have got a GS with leather for £34995 with 12000 miles on a 59 plate. I guess once you stomach the cost of buying a new or used D4 you should have cheap motoring for 2-3 years with the warranty.65 Discovery 4 SE Tech Firenze Red 20"s

ISTR VED (well, CO2) on an auto D4 is same as Manual D3? Also think that double VED only applies on first registration? D4 prob eats tyres faster than D3 but only cos perf/handling lets you chuck it around more - drive it like a D3 and it shouldn't be worse
D4 prices are silly secondhand - mine, at a year old, is insured on agreed value for more than I paid for it - but then that should help on resale of yours. Either way, you're still looking at 20k plus "cost to change" which pays for a lot of servicing and depreciation, and quite a few extended warranties. On that basis, head has to say stick with the D3 over buying D4 - but pure economics of running these doesn't come into it for most of us...

There won't be one - 7 seat RR instead which will be more expensive - bonded aluminium, hi-tec hybrid options etc.. Only option then will be "county" version of new defender, assuming they do go with tat, which isn't certain.
Re VED, mine is pre-March 06, so only pay half K rate. Waiting to see if budget extends that concession.
Re running costs, apart from VED, insurance would be bit more for new car and 255/55/19s more expensive than 235/70/17s, but expecting extra cots to be offset by warranty benefit. Assuming economy of auto 3.0 about the same as 2.7 manual
Because of S/H values now, assuming get new one through Buyacar or similiar, my spreadsheet shows annual depreciation running at just under £3K a year, which is not bad.

Just wait til values sort themselves out!! With the thirst these cars have and fuel at this level or higher, lead balloon springs to mind. Hanging on to my two til they are ready for the knacker's yard, works out way cheaper than changing.

I've been going through the same head/heart question for a couple of months now. Do I keep my 56 HSE or trade up to a slightly used or new HSE. LR need some sort of finance offer to tempt me at the moment, base rate at 0.5% yet the cheapest loans seem to be around 7-8% APR. Cash is better spent paying down the mortgage, but a 0% finance offer on the D4 would probably make me throw the sensible hat away.

I suspect so too....as LR eventually catch up with demand, the mild weather arrives and interest (mortgage) rates rise, not to mention fuel prices, secondhand values will fall quickly.....we're all doomed
