That's the thing, innit? There isn't really a "good" or "bad" accessory - if you only need to fit a tent, or lug around a coupla canoes, the LR rack is quieter & prettier.
If you need to load 80litres of fuel and water and tent and spare wheel and the braai and dog's kennel....(ok this is getting stupid), then you need something a bit more beefy.
Almost like comparing a ballerina to a rugby player...

TFC - on the tent topic - have a look at "echo", "ezi-awn" as well as the FR one. They even make one with a solid cover that is fiberglass I think. They are all about the same price range, ie. from R6k for the FR one to R10k for the solid cover ones.
I have the FR one, but its nylon instead of canvas, which might be a bit colder in your neck o the woods, but it is apparently lighter.

Wayne is a top gent, as are most SA boys Wink

Now I just need to nag him about that rear-mount spare, and the 110litre fuel tank, and the ladder.....

Good to hear you got sorted FLO. All's well that ends well.

Baben: When I went to Corsica I had the tent, a heavy box and 2x20L diesel on the LR roofrack...

Noooo problems... Although you are right, it looks as it can carry nothing

Hi Penguin

That's probably about what the LR rack can handle. I didn't mean it was a piece of junk, just if you need to carry a whole lot more than the 75Kg, you need something much stronger, especially if you will be travelling on really corrugated roads.

During our recent trip, we were carrying 80l fuel, spare wheel, tent, gas bottle, which is probably up to about 200kg.

As 10FC mentioned, its a pity that the only obvious way to mount a rack is to use the captive bolts welded into the roof, cos these are quite small. Has anyone seen a rack that is fitted in an alternative way? In my opinion, the method of mounting the roof rails and the rails themselves are the weakest point.

I am in the process of fitting a side rail to mine so hopefully it will look more like the G4 110 rack. I am not saying there is anything wrong with the rack, all I am trying to achieve is a chunkier look Wink

Post piccies so we can see.
Have you come up with any ideas for making it quieter? Maybe some kind of fairing like the G4 one?
I am looking into this, but so far have had no great brainwaves

Mine has been pretty quiet (but I didn't experience the LR expo one for a comparison) - fixing on both of the wind deflectors helped. If I can secure the leading edge of each to the rack as per the instructions, it'll probably be quieter still.
(Baben, if you missed them, a couple of shots in my gallery)

DrLex, try a bit of double sided foam tape, or black gaffer tape first, might save you the effort if there's no difference Wink

Yeah - duct tape to the rescue again. Then I can move on to asking Andrew for his neoprene offcuts and further malarky... Laughing

All I need to do now is fully weld it and get it powder coated. The side rail is ¾” ally tube. I will not be using this as a lashing point as it is not strong enough. It is mainly there for the ‘look’.
