High Sulphur Diesel

Hi, i am interested in importing a LR3 from the uk to Jamaica, where our diesel fuel has a sulphur content of 2000 ppm. I will be working in the UK for one year and would like to buy this fine speci-mine of a vehicle but i am unsure if the engine from a UK spec vehicle is robust enough to handle high sulphur diesel until it is available in Jamaica in 2009. I have searched the length and breath of the internet to no avail and would like some info on this. Recently in an article cursing the non-availability of low sulphur diesel in Jamaica an 'expert' said the following: "It depends on the engine, some of the engines prefer or require to use a low sulphur to run more efficiently. There are some models such as the Land Rover which have been designed for the global market (and higher sulphur levels) which due to the specification of their engines means they can operate with higher sulphur diesel than here," said Dr. Wright.
Is there any truth to this?

UK Diesel is pretty much all now 50ppm Sulphur quality. The TDV6 is designed to at least 350ppm - which is the EN590 current standard.

I have some information somewhere relating to impact of sulphur content in diesel fuel, but cannot for the life of me find it at the moment. I will continue to search. Sad

I would suggest trying one of the international LR shippers for the 'Rest of World' spec.

Certainly Capurro in Gibraltar (http://www.cops.gi/pages_html/row.html) seem decent and knowledgeable in this area, and have been happy to discuss general requirements before, including importing vehicles.

Worth a try through email at least, in my opinion.

Some further input for you - which isn't going to help! The TDV6 will not run on High Sulphur Diesel - it is not designed to do so, and can cope with 350ppm, possibly up to 500ppm.

The UK service information (15,000 mile service intervals) is based upon the general use now of 50ppm diesel (city diesel, as it is popularly known). If you run higher sulphur diesel, more frequent oil changes are required - hence the difference oil change service interval in some countries.

One reason (though not the only one) that the TDV6 engine is not available in the US is that US diesel has a sulphur level beyond the design for the engine. As such, I doubt you'll have much luck with 2,000ppm.

I would suggest that you contact Land Rover directly, who will advise on the maximum sulphur for the fuel, as well as a service regime based upon whatever that maximum is.

Funny enough i spoke to the local dealer here in Jamaica and the vehicle that they sell here has the same specifications of those in the UK. They said that they have sold them for over a year now, and to date they are no problems. The do recommend a more frequent service interval..but again after one year, the few that are here have not died...it may be because these are new engines..but the rep has said that they do not know what will happen down the road..i.e. 2-3 yrs time. I hope to use mine (if bought) in the UK for one year...which means i will be importing it to Jamaica late 2007...the designated time period for offereing low sulphur diesel is early 2009...so i might take the chance of using it for one year in Ja (late 2007 - early 2009) and seeing what happens...If that fails i might be back here crying..and pouring my heart out (i love it so much..how could it do this to me?)..I really want the landie and hope that it's not like my apple laptop...exoctic and expensive but will leave me at anytime...Again wish me luck...Landie UK dealers here i come!

LOL...good joke...on the US forum its averaging 11 mpg in town and 15 on the highway...petrol prices like it is in the UK i honestly don't think so...while i love the UK i don't really intend to help out your economy that much by forking over some much money to your gov. in gas taxes, and gas station attendants salaries..I intend to be up and down (leeds to north wales, to shrewsbury, and even to london occassionally)..So i would need to be a millionaire in britain to own one...Plus the duties on such a vehicle in jamaica is stupendous (188% of the CIF)...I would need to sell my self to keep it....Cides i have a turbo diesel now and have been driving a diesel vehicle since 96....and don't intend to ever return to gas engines (diesel rule..the world jus doesn't know it yet).....But thanks for the laugh.....

A minor point - their gallons are different to ours, so the consumption figures won't be quite that bad at UK pumps. Still pretty poor in comparison to the 30mpg we get in mixed use.

I thought about importing a Diesel to the US. But, who will service your vehicle? How will you deal with warranty issues?
