Disco 3 Drop plate/ Fixed tow hitch fitting |
|
Hi,
I've bought a second hand drop plate/ fixed tow hitch (rather than a swan neck one) to go on my Disco 3. Although second hand it all seems to be in working order but it just won't slot all the way in when I'm trying to attach it. Am I doing something wrong or is this the reason it's second hand?
Anyone with any ideas please let me know, cheers.

somethimes they are quite hard to get to locate. Is the plunger in the towbar moving in and out easily? Did your car still have the red plug in the receiver hole, or was this missing. If so, you could have some road crap in there that needs cleaning out. How about a tap upwards with a mallet?

Plunger seems to be ok. the red plug was still in and it all seems clean and clear in there. I've tried a bit of gentle tapping and even jacking it in form below. No luck.
There's a little pin that sticks up from the near the top of the section that goes in. It seems like it should retract but it doesn't and that seems to be the problem if there is one.

I had mine completely apart when I swapped it from my old D3 to my new one, and it was well gunked up, had to buy a new locking handle. I dont recall a small pin sticking up anywhere (but that could just be my memory).

Beware forcing it in! Despite the size and weight, this is a precision fit.
Look closely at the sides of the tongue that engages in the socket. There are two raised contact pads on each side. These need to be smooth and free of burrs for the unit to engage. Just lying about on the floor is enough to damage them sufficiently not to fit. As yours is second-hand it may have had a rough time before you got it.
I had to rectify this when I got a second-hand swan-neck one. I did a little gentle rubbing with a very fine pattern maker's file. Maybe use fine sand-paper if you are unsure - certainly NOT an angle grinder! A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.
