slight knock when turning, any ideas please?
Hi all, hoping I can get some advice please. Got my 55reg HSE 2 weeks ago, have discovered it has an intermittent knock when turning. I've got it booked into dealers next week, but any possible ideas would be useful. The knock is very slight, more of a "feeling" through the steering wheel and is most noticable when turning out of a junction, but it doesn't always happen! From what I've found on here, possibly bushes or wishbone?! Can someone please explain? Many thanks!
Apart from that, I LOVE it!

That sounds more like the ball joint to me had a similar problem in the past with the freelander but so far ok on my disco the forums got loads of stuff on the above and how to replace them yourself.
Good luck

I had this exact thing combined with a knocking over rough ground. Replaced the steering shaft part that is highlighted. Had a lot of play in it. Now it is tight as new.
This is the part that needed replacing - cost c.£52. Relatively easy fitting.

milesg,
When you say "over rough ground"....do you mean off-road?
Mine is handling quite good in normal use, sometimes a knock when driving up a sidewalk....
but when I put mine in offroad level....and I go on rough ground....I have a lot of knocking and lot of "play" feeling in my steeringwheel....
Its as if you hold you steeringwheel tight but the wheels seems to judder left and right....
Allready changed the lower steering colum and the inner trakc ball rods...bushings, antiroll bar.....still the same.
And dealer tells me that I COULD be the upper steeringcolum but thats not under warranty.
I hope you had the same and that I can find a solution.
Could you send me that picture in large please ([email protected])
Mine was Lower UJ in rack - could be many things. Dealer probably better than forum to diagnose "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Think you've got the wrong bit there fella, that's £350.... and not known for causing any knocks, most common cause is track rod inner ball joint (circa £14) or lower steering column assembly ( circa £61) both take about an hour to fit
Mine was deffo UJ - thanks to LRE Snowdonia pulling the car off a tree. Steering arm and UJ took the pain . . . ."To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Not you mate, the box in the Microcat screengrab above is £350, lower steering colum (inc UJ) is about £61 for the latest version

I've got a knock too - from the inner ball-joint area but may be the steering rack!

I went to pick up the car with the clunk still there. One final attempt now for them to remove. They have had the car more than me since I bought it almost month ago!
I've been told it's not the steering rack but they are using parts off a used car to see what is faulty now....

Thanks for all the advice. Car was in at dealers yesterday, they've replaced the bushes and the knock has gone! Was also a steering column issue which they've fixed too apparently. All done under warranty, no problems. Hope you get sorted soon Scotia.

Hi scotia_steve - did you solve your steering issues? I have the same sort of this and i'm not sure where to start. ARB bushes seem to be the most likely culprit.
