How many miles have you left in the tank when the low fuel warning light comes on ??
I have been down to 20 miles left in tank and the light doesn't come on. This is quite disconcerting as I live 10 miles away from a fuel station. Guess its faulty and need to visit the dealer !!!

My question is why ever let a car get down to 20 miles range? Why rely on the warning light/range display? Why not just fill up when the fuel guage show a quarter? 2011 D4 Landmark, Mini Cooper SD Clubman, Range Rover Vogue SE

Well if everyone did that they could reduce the size of the tank by 25%, and use it to save weight.
I hate filling up so let the tank run down and then fill up from nearly empty to full, this also ensures all of the fuel in the tank is fresh I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

So apart from the stroppy reply - does anyone know the REAL answer - i.e. not how much the gauge thinks is left, but how much is actually left,
For example due to work and mad morning I did 15 miles driving like Damon Hill this morning with "0" showing - still only took 73 litres to fill it up? I thought it was a 75 L tank?

You still had a fair bit left if you only got 73 litres in, if i am on <10 miles range and needle at the bottom, i can usually squeeze around 85 litres in!
The gauge is crap, i think every D3 is different as well, so empty in one is 10 litres left in another, not that that helps you I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Firstly I don't usually let the tank get that empty, i do usually fill up when its less than half full, near "cheap" diesel, etc etc. However one day I was unaware for whatever reason and then suddenly realised that I had hardly any fuel left because my low fuel warning light hadn't come on !!!!!
I am fully aware of what the manual says thank you. I was trying to ascertain if any one else had this problem or was it just me.

My old D3 ...the fuel light always came on at 50 miles left ( so it said on trip computer ) ..my new one ..very random ..as much as 63 miles left and and low as 36 miles left .
My old one i got as much as 27miles after it showing zero ...i dont think i would risk it in the new one .G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

The Discovery is a very sophisticated vehicle. You may have read the manual, but another poster clearly hasn't (based on his post). It really does pay to read it all, however dull, quite carefully.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. The low fuel light doesn't come on!! At all !! No matter how low the tank gets. My D3 warning light came on when I had about 50 -60 miles range left, so I am used to that little reminder in case I am not paying attention to the guage.
I obviously have a faulty warning light, as in it doesn't work !!
Obviously no one else has this problem. Yet !!

juliem, does the low fuel light illuminate when you first turn the ign on? (warning lamp test phase) assuming a D4 does this (as I only have a D3).

The measuring system is the same in the D3 as the D4.
The tank size is slightly smaller, 86.3 litres (neck fill not included) of which 82 is, supposedly, useable. The warning light, as in the D3, should illuminate when there is about 12 litres left in the tank. On the D4, the engine will stop when the fuel level falls below 4 litres. There are two fuel sensors in the tank to provide for a) attitudinal position and b) redundancy. The sensors send signals over the CAN bus to the instrument cluster. If the warning light is not coming on, but the fuel guage appears to be operating normally, something is clearly amiss.

My only gripe is that the fuel warning light always comes on and says 15 miles or so left. That said, you sorta know that you're running low when the gauge gets down to nearly empty anyway, so the obvious answer is to just fill up before the warning light comes on.If in doot, flat oot!!
