The ZA snorkel question (again) |
|
As the LR/Mantec is not a snorkel, which is recommended TJM Airtec Snorkel or Safari?
Or something else? Anyone, any ideas ...

I think Heine has the safari - no doubt he will be along shortly.
He obviously doesn't get up as early as we do

Hi AP,
It looks as though the RAI for the D4 now replaces the corrugated hose from the guard intake, and also the bend leading to the airbox.
I haven't seen them in the flesh but I suspect that these replacements will make the RAI as water tight as the Safari snorkel.
I also believe that the new RAI will fit the D3.

Re Baben's comment on Heine's sleeping habits: I was at LR Midrand this morning to pick up parts of some placticky bits the kids got hold of, and saw (and heard) what I think was Heine's V8 being driven into the workshop.
I have heard only good comments on the Safari snorkel and vaguely remember it to be much cheaper than the Airtec equivalent for my Mazda bakkie.

Yup my car is in at the moment for a service and other small bits . (Looks like I need a new front sideshaft)
As to the snorkel/ RAI issue . I had a Safari which is a "real" snorkel on the diesel . Half the price and half the looks of the Mantec one . The V8 has the mantec RAI which is much prettier , but it is not waterproof and is twcie the price .
Depends where you want to take the car I guess . I went the mantec , as a petrol engine will have other issues in deep water

The D4 RAI is the same as the D3 one, however you can by an extra kit which "improves" the ducting, but by no means makes it a snorkel - so much so that I didn't bother buying the extra kit and have just fitted the RAI like on the D3 - it does what I need, if I wanted a full snorkel, I'd probably go for a Safari Snorkel like I had on our D1 300TDi.

Thanks for all the responses. Any tried/ checked out the TJM Airtec? Too much water up the hose makes me very nervous; water sitting in the honeycomb below a wet airfilter is too scary.
Kabous, is the D4 left air intake not only a fake? It is not open, I believe.
Bushwanderer, I will follow up on your comment and investigate. Great to hear they may be improving on the RIA and turning it into a functioning snorkel. "None of Nature's landscapes are ugly so long as they are wild"

Saw a fully kitted D4 on N3 at Giloolys this morning - RR, RAI, Rear wheel carrier (assuming it has extra fuel tank).
Anyone from this forum
Does all the D3 kit fit the D4 Erstwhile - D3 S '07. Dual battery system. Upgraded tow hitch. Mantec skid plate. Frontrunner rr. Tmax double headed built in compressor

Bushwanderer, Deon,
Have made enquiries re RAI on D4/D3 and improved hose/ perforated bend. Hope to know by tomorrow.
If the parts exist and it will convert RAI into snorkel, I am taking one.
How does water that is sucked/splashed into snorkel, not end up in the airbox?
On LR RAI as it was/is the perforated bend could drain the water out. If this is all sealed ... "None of Nature's landscapes are ugly so long as they are wild"

Hi AP,
As Heine suggested, the air is drawn into the lower part of the airbox, allowing water to separate before the air goes through the filter.. There is a drain in the box with a one-way valve (duck bill).
Best Wishes,
Peter
PS: The Safari snorkel still uses this airbox. The Bearded Dragon
