Intermittant Steering shake - Any thoughts? |
|
55K 05 HSE Auto
Over last couple of weeks there is intermittant shaking felt through the steering wheel - at times quite violent, if I come to a stop and turn the engine off and on again the car runs without vibration for a while and returns. - May not be linked.
Can feel the vibration over 30mph until 75 plus. Fuel consumption has dropped to 19mpg. Also when the accelerator is backed off and allowing the vehicle to coast, the speed drops off pretty rapidly. Under light braking at low speeds >30mph you can feel on / off braking. After stopping when you pull off there is a crunch / knock noise and then fine.
Finally in the morning glow plug lights stay on for upto 10secs.
Any thoughts before I send her into LR.
Cheers

It would point to a sticking brake somewhere. The calipers can seize, also the park brake can stick on. When the symptom next appears, check for a hot wheel to indicate which caliper is sticking.
Glow plugs stay on for a period of time depending on a number of factors, including air temp and coolant temp. If its cold, and the engine is stone cold I would say 10 seconds is normal.

Well if it's happening through the wheel and when the engine is backed off it doesn't sound like an engine problem. It sounds more like a balance problem, that said the fuel consumption and the feeling of on off braking suggests to me that you might have warped discs or a brake sticking on. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Thanks for the info,
Made an early start this morning after finding front nearside alloy hot after going to tesco. The caliper seal is torn and the one of the pistons is locked solid and heavily pitted.
Looks like time for a replacement unit. Any advice on the best place to get one other than LR or is this my only option?
Cheers in advance.
