AJS Tyres, bunch of tossers
Well I was on the M25 today and thought as I was passing the AJS tyres junction I would pop in and see what they had, it's only a few hundred yards from the motorway junction.
When I arrived I explained that I wanted to see what tyres they had for a Disco 3, I was directed up some stairs to the head office, I knocked on the door and was greeted by a friendly chap. I explained that I had some new 18" rims and that I had retained my 17" rims with the Continental contact 4x4 tyres, so wanted something a little different to a road tyres. I was taken down into the tyre rack area and after great debate and looking, feeling and touching a bunch of different tyres I narrowed it down to the AT2's and the ATR's. The AT2's look quite aggressive but what I did notice was that all the staff had them on their vehicles, and they have a choice of pretty much any tyre they want to run. I then looked at the ATR, I liked the fact that it was a little less agressive and on feeling the sides seemed to have thicker side walls, Andy had a feel and tended to agree.
I will not be doing too much off roading but wanted something that would look after me when I was, as I already had the Continentals, either of these tyres would have done. So my next question was wear and performance, all the AJS staff swore by the AT2's, and that was backwed up by the fact they have them on their own vehicles, and there are testimonials on their site about the massive amount of miles these tyres can do.
Next question was price, Andy's prices are fair but there is no doubt on the AT2's you could save a few quid on the online stores such as Camskill, but would not have the same level of personal interaction and double checking plus they never had them in stock. Anyway the ATR's 255 60 18's that Andy is selling are absolute bargains compared to online, he is a couple of pounds cheaper which includes fitting and balancing than say Camskill, this threw me in a quandry as I have always used Camskill as the bench mark.
So do I go for their experience and AT2's or do I go for the Andy bargain ATR's although more expensive than the AT2's, I must say loved the look of the ATR's and of course the great saving, there was only one way to deal with this, and that was to toss. I got an independent fitter to select heads or tails and flipped the coin, he said heads for AT2's, it landed on the workshop floor heads! I aid OK I will go with what it says and they started to take all the wheels off, as they were taking the tyres off I thought, I really, really like the ATRs and remember something on this forum about them, so I said to the guys, look, let's make it best of three, they agreed and I tossed again, the coin fell to the floor and it was heads! Oh dear not really what I wanted to see, but I had set the criteria and At2's had won.
Well just as they had selected the At2's from the vast warehouse they have and rolled them in, I glanced at the ATR's on a rack and felt that they looked nicer, so I asked if they would mind if I had one more toss just to make sure that what I was doing was right, again the fitters selected heads for ATR's, up the coin went and down it came landing on the floor, rolled a bit on it's side and dropped down HEADS. Well that was it, I was beaten by the flip of a coin, so at least I can say now that I have the right tyres for my car, and that ATR's were a part of the process.
Anyway, if anyone wants bargain ATR's best you call Andy ASAP and get them reserved before he realises how cheap he is selling them for, just look at Camskills price excl delivery, take of a quid or so and that is the price you will get them professionsly fitted and balanced incl vat by AJS tyres
Great service, lovely coffee, brilliant chocolate biscuits, and a pleasure to deal with
As for my AT2's, I guess I just need to find a field and try them

Bet they just love you turning up and messing with their minds! Did they ask you to phone ahead next time so they can organise a quick vacation?? If you liked the ATRs why not just point, say 5 of them and get the tyres you wanted??

Still think AJS might prefer the thread title being changed

JF Lux - All part of the plan Mantec sump guard now bought and fitted, and now AT2's on and being run in
Also getting the tinting done this Thursday so I don't dazzle those I pass up the slopes with my AT2's
Just need to ensure I am not out of the country where the sun shines that weekend!
For any doubters re the thread title, this was agreed with Andy at AJS, I am sure in time he will find this thread and we can get his version of events

re the 17's I have 8 of those with nearly new Conti 4x4 contacts on, as they were so great in the snow this year I am going to keep 5 as a spare set, perhaps take the tyres off the other three and sell the rims, or see if someone is after a tyre & rim set to have as a spare if they have a spacesaver at present. Wiggs has examined the 8 wheels and tyres so can vouch for their newness
I am not very good at photoshopping so did my very best as others seem to have done the same recently, bad this forum, I am turning into a sheep and getting and doing what others get and do without thinking
Just the full catless large bore straight through stainless steel exhaust system to get fitted now from Twisted Performance

I would be interested in a set of four/five depending on which wheels the 17's are if you decide to split that way. Badda bing.......How you doin'?

Peter,
You are one of the funniest people I have come across, when you barged into my office stating you were from the Inland Revenue, you almost made me wet myself even if it did not come across that way to you.
You have broken all records as the longest decision maker in my entire history of working for myself.
But it was refreshing that when you did finally make up your mind ( some hours later) that you did it the scientific way and asked one of my guys to help you toss for it. Hillarious! fitting tyres has never been so much fun.
The world is a far better place with people like you around, makes a great change.
Peter,
If you ever feel the need to flip a coin or two again, feel free to pop in as we are all a bunch of quallified "TOSSERS".
All the very best with your "tossers" choice of tyre
