22" wheels pro's & con's
hi all , contemplating the big question of 20" or 22" wheels & the pro's & con's of the larger wheel , @ present running on 19" which would keep for winter use. but fancy some bling for summer ' would like to hear from anyone running on the larger wheel and if ride quaility does suffer drastically ? many thanks

20's are OK, stick with nothing lower than 45 profile, and dont go too wide, as handling can become tiresome.
22's - you would have to be down at 35 profile to keep sensible rolling radius, and this would give a very harsh ride.

Jonny,
I'm using 22" wheels for the Summer, with 285/35 Proxes Tyres - no problems with ride being too hard at all & when I change to my 19" Standard LR wheels hardly notice a difference when driving...
But I admit, wouldn't fancy doing much off road stuff using these!

I've been much back and fourth with what to fit for this season!
I had the chance to test some 22" with offset 40 and 305/40-22" tires on my D3. Those fit just perfect and no rubbing at all.
The ride was just perfect, a bit more firm, but no worries! And the looks..... 8)
305/40-22" give you a 5.2% increase in rolling dia.
These where regulaer street tires, I bet you could also fit Cooper Zeon LTZ's in 305/40-22 under there.[email protected]

5.2% is quite an increase, and could put extra load through the drivetrain. Most of the wheel/tyre guys I know say dont go above 2.5% of what was fitted as standard. I always use a 255/55x19 as the standard tyre to compare against. That gives you these options:
Tyre code Diameter Circumference Difference
---------- -------- ------------- ----------
315/30 R22 748 mm 2350 mm -2 %
325/30 R22 754 mm 2369 mm -1.22 %
265/35 R22 744 mm 2337 mm -2.46 %
275/35 R22 751 mm 2359 mm -1.55 %
285/35 R22 758 mm 2381 mm -0.63 %
295/35 R22 765 mm 2403 mm 0.29 %
305/35 R22 772 mm 2425 mm 1.21 %
315/35 R22 779 mm 2447 mm 2.12 %
255/40 R22 763 mm 2397 mm -0.04 %
265/40 R22 771 mm 2422 mm 1.01 %
275/40 R22 779 mm 2447 mm 2.06 %

Drug dealers wheels them 22".
Maybe Discotres will be looking for some soon.
Sorry but I think they give a very harsh ride, have had lots who have changed back, 20" is as big as I think you would want to go, I agree with al cope.

In Norway 5% increase is what is allowed, so I would be just above the limit.
See my gallery for pictures. This is not my car, but the same wheel combo.
I'll have mine on after easter. When I get back from USA roadtesting the LR4 V8!! [email protected]

I can hereby confirm that 305/40-22" WILL fit a 2008 D3 with alloys that have ET40.
I just had them fitted! And it looks 8) 8) 8) 8)
No rubbing at all. Unless I drive it..
No but it may rub just slightly in corners when I drive, but no rubbing on full turn at standstill.

wonder what "rubbing" noises you might get when chucking that into a corner at speed, and the body rolls a bit.
What weight rating did you get on those tyres?

I wouldn't go by my Stormers with 285/50/20 Cooper LTZ's
Gives a slightly bigger sidewall than a std 255/55/19.
Ideal use for both on and off road.
No extra road noise, no tramlining, ideal road holding and braking.
Also got a nice deep chunky tread pattern.
Oh and they fill out the arches nicely
