Seized caliper
i gusy i am new on here only had my Disco 3 for 3 months, last week my passanger side front caliper seized closed which in turn wreaked a set of new pads and a new disc as well.
My question really is. How common a fault is this and have anyone else in countried this.
Also had my washer wipes stop working in the freeze hopefully it is just a fuse if not how much would a new pump cost fitted.

Welcome Simmy2010, I've had 3 seize on me over the last 18 months. If (or when) the front right goes I get a set of steak knives. Also had a set of new pads trashed but haggled when I paid for one but haggled the price down by the costs of the pads so not too unhappy.
Change the washer fuse to 15a, fuse 11 ISTR, and the system prob froze cause of weak screen wash (been there, done that). Presently run down to -12c (SE of Inverness) and sometimes freezes up, need to get better stuff.

Deffo the case?? Mine were where water had gotten into the pistons and corroded them, jamming their sliding. LR paid for first, I paid for 2nd (Tesco said no) and Tesco stumped up for 3rd (wasn't complaining!!). Wonder once Tesco warranty dies if it's worth changing 4th preemtively as don't want it failing on way down to Tunisia!

I thought that I had a seized calliper recently. However, on inspection it was a build up of corrosion on the carrier under the stainless shims which the pads sit in. The calliper sliders and the piston were free, but the pads were jammed really solid in the carrier and were not able to back off the disk when the brakes were released. My symptoms were hot disk and squeeking (similar to EPB being out of adjustment as I found after 1 night spent dismantling and re-adjusting EPB only for it to be the same the next day!!)
Quickly fixed the problem by removing the carrier (very tight bolts) and removing the corrosion with a file under where the shims sit. Plenty of copper slip applied until the next time. You could scrape the corrosion off in situ but access isn't great.
Much cheaper than new callipers or a piston / seal kit.
Expect to break the wear sensor! The dash warning / chime can be disabled while you source a new sensor by cutting the two wires going to the sensor head and joining them both together to make the circuit.

Always seem to be a problem on pin slider calipers more than the opposing piston jobbies with retaining pins. the pads/ shims can be made with a greater gap, however this give pad knock when to slam the brakes on. no easy fix.
